Tuplets (deleting)

How do you delete a tuplet without changing the notes preceding it, which should remain tuplets.

If I select the 2nd tuplet bracket, it selects both it and the one before it. So, after hitting DELETE, this is what I get:

What appear to be two triplets is actually one half-note triplet spanning the barline, which Dorico correctly notates as splitted (but it is still one object).
In this case, where you just want to get rid of the second half of it, I have the following trick:

  1. select the three crotchets (quarter notes) before the barline (but without the triplet bracket)
  2. type ; 3 return, which turns these crotchets into a nested triplet
  3. delete the ‘outer’ triplet
  4. the nested triplet will expand to take the space of the original crotchets.

If there are already notes in the second bar, more tricks are needed (and possible), but for this situation this will do.

Thanks for the quick reply! But – I actually wanted to delete the second group of triplets (which appear as rests). I tried your trick:
selected the 3 rests (NOT the bracket)
typed “;3” and hit return
When I try to select the second (outer triplet), it selects BOTH again, so when I hit DELETE it results in the the second image of my original post.
I think I might just delete both bars and try again. (This should be easier, no?)

@PjotrB said to select the three crotchets before the barline, not rests.

FWIW - The reason that Dorico thought I was entering half-note triplets is because I selected the triplet option (in the sidebar) BEFORE I selected quarter notes. So the app neglected to switch to quarter notes (from half notes) after I changed the rhythmic value.

User error! It was not the app that neglected to switch. (You could have entered the tuplet as ;3:2q despite having half notes selected)

Awesome! Could you show me where I might find this solution in the documentation in the future.
Too late to try your solution now, but I’ll take your word for it.
Thanks!

See step 5 here: Inputting tuplets, and/or a fairly comprehensive list of what you can type into the tuplet popover here: Tuplets popover

When folks ask this question, I go to the online manual (F1) and search. You could do the same and save me time.

Yeah … I’m afraid the search engine in the online documentation is less than … uh … robust. I already spent quite a while looking. YouTube is usually better.
Thanks anyway.

Excellent. Most helpful.

I searched for input tuplet. My first link was the second result (not the first but very visible, even on an oldish small iPhone screen). My second link was the next page available from the bottom of the first linked page.

To learn the tuplet popover syntax just search for tuplet popover. It’s really not difficult.

Well, I searched for “delete tuplet” and the first hit was “Turning tuplets into normal notes.” I guess I just have to learn how to search for the proper text.
Again, thanks for the help.
