Tuplets wrong duration

I’m in 4/4 and a full measure tuplet is showing with quarter notes. Even if I delete them, enter quarter notes and convert them to “3:4” tuplet they still show as quarter notes. They should show as half notes as far as I know…

Actually, what you have defines 3q:4q. If you set your first note value to the (correct) half note before entering the tuplet, then you should get 3h:2h just by typing ; + 3. (Dorico pulls the tuplet value out of whatever basic note value is currently selected.)

(Or just put 3:2h in the popover.)

Thanks much for the help.

How does Dorico allow it to show up as three quarter notes? Is it a bug? (the notes, with correct duration, are imported via xml).

For future reference, is there any way to change existing notes (they are correct in terms of lengths in the “play” window)? It’s kind of a bother to delete are redo them.

You had the quarter note tool selected, and you asked Dorico to put three of those in the space of 4. I think the program did exactly what you asked!

I imported the notes via xml (which had the correct values). I’m not sure in what context having them as quarter notes would be correct.

Oh, I’m not sure what might happened with xml import. But 3 quarters in the space of 4, which is what you indicated in the second sentence of the original post, is a valid (if unorthodox) tuple.

Yeah, I’ll have to investigate further. I do a lot of importing, so hopefully there is a way to simply switch the notes form quarter to half, and not have to remove and redo.

If you fix the first one, then select the full measure (all three half notes + tuplet), you will be able to opt/alt + click at the beginning of each future measure to quickly replace the rhythm.

But…then you’d have go back through and fix the pitches.

Wonder if there’s a clever way to automate the “re-rhythm-ing” process with a script…?

EDIT: And…there is a simple fix…! (Below, from @Christian_R.)

Hi @logsplitter, there is a very fast way to show the tuplet as 3:2h instead of 3:4q, using the Requantise functionality:

No bug here: both notations are mathematically correct
There are a couple of Preferences for MusicXML import that refer to tuplets: you can try with different settings for them (checking or uncheching them before reimporting the XML), to see if your imported XML mirrors then better what your original file displayed.

Very cool. Those techniques to convert the existing notes will save me a bunch of time. Thanks.
