Among the countless options available in Dorico, I’d like to know if there’s one that would automatically adjust the size of staves when adding them to a given page layout? (I’m referring to the size of staves listed under Layout options > Page set-up > Space size).
Second question: I’ve heard that working with condensation enabled can slow Dorico down; is that true? Is it better to engrave the score with condensation disabled and only enable it at the end of the process? (Note that I’ve tried both and haven’t noticed any significant difference, as Dorico is sometimes less responsive to input, as if it were waking up from a little nap)
No: there’s no option to change the size of the staff based on the number of staves you have on the page. (You could be hiding some, using Condensing, or other factors.)
Finale used to do that, and it drove me potty. It was never what I wanted it to do.
Condensing very large scores can slow things down a bit, yes. It’s certainly best not to turn on Condensing until you have entered all the music notation; and then turn it on once you are fine-tuning the layout.
That’s not available currently. You have to adjust this yourself.
Since condensing very much depends on the context around notes, the result can change while you enter new notes. It is strongly advised to enable condensing at the end of the process. (As you can’t directly edit staves that are condensed while viewing them in page view, activating it while still inputting things does not even make too much sense IMHO…)
And Sibelius too ; very well. And we can adjust a little afterwards if we are not satisfied by the result (but seldom necessary). It’s a shame Dorico doesn’t offer that; it would save a bit of time. But perhaps we’ll see this feature in a future version – who knows?
About condensing, thanks both. I shall now disable it until I have finished input.
