Can anyone tell me how to get the first eight to overlap as a white note so that I don’t get the dotted half and the eight clashing and affecting layout?

Should you need it, there’s a global option for this — a Notation Option, i.e. on a per-flow basis.
Under Notation Options > Voices > Unison half notes…
Then, whatever your option is, you can override it in the Properties Panel in Engrave Mode, as @Janus is showing above.
