Tying different note heads and glissandos

Hello everyone,
I’m copying an old contemporary music sketch (not engraved) from another music notation software to Dorico and I’m struggling in managing ties: Apparently I cannot tie two notes with different noteheads.

Also I cannot input glissandos between grace notes and tied ones.

I’m faking it with slurs but it’s becoming quite time consuming. Is there a better solution for this? Thanks!

Can you share your project (or a duplicate version, cut down to just a few bars, enough to demonstrate the issue)? It’ll make it easier for us to investigate, thanks.

I withdrew my overly complicated solution, because it was too convoluted for this case - for more see below.

alternative solution

The idea was to tie two notes as usual, but then hide the second note visually and replace it with another note with the diamond note head at the same position.

  • creating the tie chain:

tie with force duration

  • hiding the second note in Engrave Mode:

  • In Write Mode: creating the second note in another voice and setting Starts voice and End voice to suppress surrounding rest:

  • Changing notehead by right-clicking:

  • In Engrave Mode: setting the new note to the same horizontal position as the hidden one by setting **Voice column index" to 0:

Thanks @Christian_R for the much simpler solution of just changing the notehead via context menu in Engrave Mode

EDIT: The simplest way to do the gliss lines is described in @Christian_R 's post below.

another possibility

Another possibility would be to just use a line, left end tied to note, right to rhythmic position:

… and adjusting in Engrave Mode to taste:

Of course, here you are.

Hi, you can change the noteheads of notes in tie chains independently, in engrave mode:

@AndreLorenzatti
For the gliss. , besides the suggestion by @meixner , you could also use the jazz articulation Fall Smooth (straight), and adjust it in engrave mode:

To adjust the positioning a little more globally, you can also use the Engraving Options (the vertical span for example, set to 2):

Ah!! I’m an idiot - sometimes … I didn’t know this one …

Thanks @Christian_R !

I will delete my overly complicated solution as worthless above

@AndreLorenzatti please mark @Christian_R 's solution as “solved” so others searching the forum can find it.

Thank you everyone! That was really helpful!

Indeed, Christian is a Master Jedi !
But, Michael, I certify that you are far far far from being an idiot !

Hi Michael, you make really great contributions to this Forum, and I learn from you! So Sir: you are absolutely not an idiot!

Maybe in this case there was a more direct way to obtain what was desired, but more complex solutions can be useful for other cases (and are a possibility to show the extended functionalities of Dorico). So you could undelete your previous solution (clicking on the circular arrow icon), and in the editor you could put that part in Hide Details mode, substituting then “Summary” with “alternative method” or something like that.

I join the others by saying you are not an idiot. Your solution might be complicated, but indeed it was a good one. I started using it before Christian intervention and It was really really clearer than my original approach
Also, I learned a bit more about Dorico! So thank you again

The idea with the Fall Smooth is ingenious - noted for future use!

Yes @Christian_R is a master Jedi, learning something every time from him :sunglasses:
