Hi, I’m on an iPad, trying to write a 4/4 measure in which the second of two eighth notes on beat 1 is tied to a dotted half note. Dorico turns the dotted half note on beat 2 into a quarter note tied to a half note. Is there a way to force it to create a dotted half note there instead? Thanks!
If you are subscribed then I believe that you have access to the Notation Options dialog. In Dorico Pro, the relevant setting is:
I assume it would be named the same, if it’s available.
Absolutely: Turn on Force Duration (O on the keyboard, or the C-clamp button on the left) before entering the note(s). Dorico will accept the durations you enter without rewriting them, as long as you’re not crossing a barline. You can also force duration of notes already entered.
In this case, you’ll want to force the eighth note as well, because when you tie it to the dotted half, it becomes one note, and takes on the attributes of the first note.
