Searched around and did find some topics about icon issues, but none that really match this one… Been having this problem intermittently since Dorico 4 (as far as I recall):
Most UI icons will randomly disappear from the entire application, usually after updating Dorico to the latest version, and then only after a reboot.
It seems like it “randomly” loses access to multiple (but clearly not all) fonts. I.e., if I ignore the missing icons and open a score, it will also complain about missing fonts there - but e.g. Bravura in the score itself seems to load fine.
Refreshing Windows’ font cache doesn’t help. Rebooting doesn’t help. “Install again” from Steinberg Download Assistant doesn’t help. The only thing that seems to help is to completely uninstall Dorico (using Windows’ “Add/Remove Apps”), and then install it again from the Download Assistant. After that, no reboot required - it starts working again. Usually until the next minor update.
Any ideas of fixes that are slightly less involved than uninstalling and reinstalling?
However, the ‘rectangles’ looks like a missing music font issue. Try Re-applying the current Music font from the Library menu > Music Fonts dialog; and check that the fonts are actually installed and active.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t fix the Source Sans Pro issue - the fonts are there, both in the system’s fonts folders and in Dorico’s folders. The music fonts are also all installed. Dorico simply doesn’t load them until it’s fully reinstalled.
I’ll have to check if reapplying the music fonts helps, when another Dorico update arrives. Because until it does, everything will likely work fine. (But I’m pretty sure Dorico doesn’t use the music font settings for icons in the launcher window - since it wouldn’t know what font to use, not having a score loaded - also, clearly the music fonts (in this case, Bravura) are there, since they’re used in the score itself without issue - see screenshot 2).
