In the Edit>Device Setup… dialog, the label “ASIO driver” is a meaningless term for Mac users. It will only lead to questions and confusion. A more appropriate label would be “Core audio device”.
I’m not sure that’s absolutely true, is it, Dave? Don’t some devices support ASIO on Mac as well?
I suppose it’s possible, but I’ve never heard of this. Since OS X came into existence, I’ve never used a device that needed or supported anything other than Core audio devices. And I’ve used devices by MOTU, Metric Halo, Apogee, Universal Audio and IK Multimedia.
