It is great to see the continued improvements in SL. My music PC is now 12 years old. It still works very well. I plan to upgrade to a modern one, but have been holding off because there is an issue with Windows 11 support of my Behringer control surface with Cubase. So I know my setup is not optimal. And that’s where the batch processing in SL is really helpful.
My current project is a live performance (about 2 hours) where the recording was one main stereo mic, plus two separately tracked vocal mics. I also had set up to track bass and piano separately, but I messed that up. So I need to do an ummix of the two stereo tracks (L & R) to remove the vocals (which I already have on clean tracks) and to separate the drums, piano, bass & guitar for a better mix. From there, I will mix normally in Cubase.
But this gives me 4 separate projects in SL (the program is in 2 sets, and there are separate L and R channels for each.) This process works for me. I have done it successfully on other live recordings.
I have two observations:
- When setting up the batch process, when I select which layers I want SL to separate, there is an “apply” button. That is really confusing. If I click on that, it starts processing immediately, which is not the intention of batch processing. So I think the correct action is to make the selections and then close that selection window without pressing any other buttons. But this is not intuitive at all. There should be no “Apply” button in this situation. And instead there should be a “Confirm choices” button or something to take me back to the module chain.
- I believe I have this set up now with 4 tabs to be processed and two modules (normalize and unmix) to process for each tab. And it is runnng as I type this. I expect this to take hours, and that is no problem. But the progress indication tells be nothing useful. There is a progress bar, but it does not show WHAT step of the processing it is in, i.e. which tab, which module.
Is there some way these things can be made more intuitive?
