I am trying to cross-beam the selected three 16ths into a single unit, but the Force Beam and Force Centered Beam commands have no effect. What are the rules regarding the voices that can/cannot be beamed? Is this a bug or just missing information on my part? Thanks.
Move the G down to the lower staff (Alt-M), then cross staff it back to the upper staff (N)
Hi @dascott you can only beam notes that are in the same voice. Your G is in another voice (and another staff).
(If you activate Voice Colours from View menu, you will see better.)
Select the G, move it to the staff below (alt+M), be sure it is in the same voice as the other two notes. Dorico, with the default Notation options [and without forced beaming], should beam all the three together (because they are inside the same beat). Or you can beam them manually. After this you can select the G again and press N (cross to staff above).
Here they are all in the same voice with their stems all pointing the correct direction – but selecting the three 16ths and beaming manually does nothing.
Select the tied notes. Untie (U). Beam the semiquavers. Select the last semiquaver and retie (T)
Thanks @Janus! That gets me back to having the three 16ths beamed.
@Christian_R, the (N) command does not do what you indicate (it sets an insert point I think), and (alt+N) moves the G but breaks the beam (puts the single flagged G on the upper staff).
Ah! The context menu for “Cross Staff above N” worked for moving the G. Why the menu command does not, who knows. Marking this Solved.
N and M are the shortcuts for lending material to the staff above or below - the original voice (and staff) retains ownership.
Alt-N and Alt-M fully hand over the material to. the first voice belonging to the staff above or below.
If these aren’t working as expected, try selecting the material, right-clicking > Cross Staff > Reset to Original Staff, then have another go. You may also need to Reset Beaming.
I found another one that does not work with the suggested solutions:
For the sake of playability, I want to beam the high G in the right hand on beat 2.5 with the B in the left hand on the next 16th. When I try N/M moving either note to the other’s staff, I get massive numbers of ledger lines, and if I ignore those, beaming produces the following:
Nothing I do gives me a connecting beam (which I would then want to convert to a centered cross-beam).
If the notes are in different voices, you cannot beam them together. If they are not on the same staff (originally) then they are different voices, even if they are both Up-stem Voice 1. (Notice the voice colors on the two staves are different.)
As Mark says…
