When I switch to Print mode, a window appears showing the progress of creating the current layout. However, if I then switch to another layout, nothing happens: the Print window remains completely blank.
I am aware that the selected page range must match the layout exactly (if a page number beyond the end of the layout is specified, nothing is displayed). In this case, however, I have selected all pages.
Is there a way to force Dorico to recreate a layout in Print mode so that I can export PDFs? Clicking Export while the main Print window is blank produces no output.
The project is fairly large: more than 30 flows, over 100,000 notes, and a large number of instruments, though I am not yet using condensing. Even so, I have no general performance issues on my Mac Ultra with 64 GB RAM, so I do not believe processing power is the cause.
I am not 100% sure, but I think you can ignore the print preview window.
Go directly to Graphic Export and then choose PDF as export format. Then hit the “Export”
button and see what is happening.
Without seeing the screen or document itself, I can only offer generalities: make sure you’ve actually selected the correct layout on the left-hand side; make sure all the options are correctly set on the right.
As Ben notes, this may be a problem elsewhere such as how the layouts are set up. A document would be best, or at least screenshots of the blank print mode preview and the setup mode layouts.
I have found that if I switch to a different layout and then return to one that initially refused to populate the main window, it appears, and that’s without my changing any settings.
It is difficult to tell what is intermittently preventing the layout from appearing, but at least I now have a workaround that is working for the moment.
On the left Ctrl/Cmd-Select all layouts that you want pdfs from,
[Ignore the Print Preview window]
Go to the left->Graphic export
*Select PDF
*“Export”.

IMHO, it does not need the Print Preview window to generate a preview prior to exporting.
If you have more than one layout selected on the left, it anyway could only show you a page of one of them.
Many thanks for the step-by-step walkthrough. I have used the Export PDF function countless times, and the issue occurs only intermittently.
Even with a layout selected and a valid print range specified, export is not always reliable. When the main window does not populate with a preview of the layout, clicking Export generally has no effect.
The next time this occurs, I will generate a diagnostic report in case it reveals anything useful to the development team.
Thanks Roy, this does indeed sound like the system is strangling itself somehow.
I notice, that these kind of quirks do happen to users with quite powerful computers rather more often than to users with “standard” configurations.
It is a good idea to post a Diagnostic file next time this happens.
I can now reproduce the problem consistently, although I’m not sure whether it’s related to the performance of my Mac.
In the very large project I’m working on, with the Score layout selected, I click the Print tab.
While Dorico is still generating the Score layout, and before it appears in the main window, I select the Piano/Vocal layout.
The Piano/Vocal layout never appears, and although the Export button appears to respond visually when clicked, nothing is actually exported.
This looks like a bug to me because, if I simply wait for the Score layout to finish generating before selecting Piano/Vocal, everything proceeds without a hitch.
Unfortunately, I’m unable to upload the score here for others to test. However, I wonder whether the same issue can be reproduced with one of the very large projects that other users have kindly shared, such as The Rite of Spring or The Planets. I’ll download those later and see whether the problem also occurs with them.
