Unable to select string via the properties panel

I had no trouble adding this string indicator via the properties panel.

Later on when trying to add one (in the same project) it didn’t work. The only way to add a string indicator for the one below is by using the popover but then I get a bigger one. I want all the string indicators to be of the same size. The ones that come with the properties panel is a bit smaller and I like them better. I’ve never had any issues with this before as far as I know. I’ve tried changing the note back from natural harmonic to a normal one, it didn’t help.

Tomas, you can change the default positions of all string indicators project-wide on the String Indicators page in Engraving Options .

I guess I’ve found a workaround. I could change the size of the string indicators in the playing techniques guitar section from 100% to 80. Then I noticed that the first one still was smaller (previously changed from 66 to 80% as well) so I changed it to 100%. Therefore I assume that “main” string indicators are the ones in the right panel while the ones added via write properties are subordinates.

So, I’ve found a way to change them to my preferred custom size and I have a faster way to add them via the popover.

I’m still curious to know why this happens and it would be great if you (Steinberg) could fix it. There could be situations where a different size is preferred, as shown in the user manual.

Here’s a copy of the file in a smaller format with the bars in question for anyone to try. Note that string no. 5 is already selected for the E natural harmonic in the properties panel. You’ll see this when clicking the note. Still, there’s no string indicator in the score.

@Tomas_E

Here the 5th string is indicated.

As a quick way to move notes to the desired string, I sometimes use tablature, even though I don’t usually work with tabs. Here you can easily change the string using the M and N keys, even for whole bars or any selection you like. When you’re done, you simply switch back to notation only.

Thanks, Armin! This means there’s something else causing this behavior. Could it have to do with yet another language issue similar to those menu ones? (Swedish)

This is what it looks like here. As you can see I’ve selected the half note, and its string indication is shown at the bottom as 5 (A2). But there’s no indication in the score. As said before, the only note I’ve been able to work with is the G on the second string. I can change that one to something else and back. I’ve tried several notes in the rest of the score without any luck.

I can add a fingering to the E harmonic.

You need to set the string indicator property to show (in addition to setting the string!)…

Ah, it was off!

Thanks, Janus!

By the way, is there some way to make this setting on by default? So you don’t need to switch it on for every fingering?

I don’t think so. (Also it is unlikely you would want a string indication on every note)

If you really really want to have all notes written with string indicators you can select all, filter notes and then switch it on.

Definitely not, but I do wish the two properties were physically closer together.

No, of course not. But if you add a string indication it would indicate that you want it to be visible on that particular note, no?

I don’t, but thanks for the tip :slightly_smiling_face:
