Understanding correction process in layout

Hi,
Could you walk me through the thought process how to solve the system spacing layout on page 2 and 3.
As an former Finale user I’m still not thinking it correctly when trying to correct these issues.

Fyrtøjet.klaver-150426 - 9.Hvor ser han rar og rig ud.dorico (2.8 MB)

This is from an children’s opera with 20 flows - I want them to look alike.

Hi,

In Engrave Mode, if you click Reset Layout, Dorico will remove all the manual System and Frame breaks, and space the music evenly according to your settings.

You could also remove them manually, one by one, but I would recommend to remove all of them first, and then decide if you want to do manual fine-tuning.

That’s the general workflow in Dorico: first let it do its thing, then adjust the Layout Options if needed (note spacing, rastral size, vertical spacing…) to get as close as possible to what you want. Only after that, if necessary, you add a few system breaks and make some note or staff spacing adjustments. But in practice, that last step often isn’t even needed!

Yes indeed, an when going from finale to dorico files are having lots of system and frame breaks incorporated that has to be removed - it does the trick.

Thanks Charles

If you import them in XML, it’s recommended to untick almost everything in Preferences>MusicXML>Import.

In your case, especially this one:

(To be done before importing, of course!)

Your paper “rouge brique” in Engrave mode window is very nice, Charles.

It’s counterintuitive, but selecting fewer things for Dorico to import from XML (in the Preferences for XML import) actually produces better results – or at least, results that are more easily managed; because if you select everything then Dorico “fixes” the beaming, note durations, slur flippage, layout, etc, etc with manual overrides, forced durations, system breaks, etc, etc.

This means that changing Engraving, Notation and Layout options doesn’t always do anything, because the document has manual overrides on everything.

I have “Text”, “Other Playing Techniques” and “Arpeggios” selected. Everything else is off!
