Unexpected shakes

After importing a musicXML file from Finale I play it to see if there are any mistakes. This one file started playing shakes when it got to some whole notes. There is nothing in the score that indicates a shake. Any clue on what is going on?

Welcome!

Impossible to say without seeing the file. What is the active Playback Technique in the Kew Editor (lower panel)…?

Could it be a tremolo sample being incorrectly generated?

What playback template are you using?

Benwiggy,

Thanks for the quick response. Here is the Playback techniques in use.

Regarding a playback template. I am keeping it simple, as I am learning to move my finale files to Dorico. I created a musicXML file and imported it. The import automatically set up the playback parameters using what I would assume is a standard playback template based on jazz band instrumentation.
It is critical for me and others to be able to move our Finale files and have them playback and print as well as or (hopefully) better than Finale. I have transferred 4 jazz band arrangements so far and have noticed at least 5 critical mistakes after the import. Including missing notes, incorrect rhythms, and extra notes in the drum part. The playback is crucial since I can listen to the imported song and pick out mistakes.

Sorry for the long response but I have high hopes for Dorico.

Sorry forgot to mention that “Dynamics” was selected in the Playing Techniques.

Those aren’t techniques as such; but really I think we’ll need to see the file. If you don’t want to post it publicly; you could email to the Dorico team; or you could PM me.

Could it be the hidden notes from Finale’s Human Playback layer?

Ok. I was able to fix it. In Finale I had put phrase marks over the trpts during the 6 measures of whole notes. When I removed them the shaking stopped. I think the Dorico import interpred them as ties but each note was different which contradicts what a tie is. I think this might have caused the issue.

You would know if that happened. Select one note and Dorico would highlight all notes under the tie, and in the status bar (bottom left) would tell you the note name. If they were not ties but slurs the status bar would say multiple selection.

A slurs in Finale should be imported as a slur in Dorico.

Because Dorico is quite strict about what musical symbols mean, it’s possible that some ‘workarounds’ in Finale don’t translate well, if you used one music symbol to represent something else.
