Unissons in divisi

Hi,

Coming from Finale.

On a score, on a page where Violin I, for example, begins as unisson and ends divisi, Dorico copies the unisson part on both staves at the beginning of the page. Is there a way to cutaway the second unisson stave, so that the divisi stave appears only when violins I are effectively divided? This facilitates the conductor’s reading a lot !

I haven’t found any such option, either local or global, as now.

In Finale, I used to be able to do this pretty easily…

Hi,

In the score, you can use the Cutaways feature (assuming you have Dorico 6):

Dorico implements divisi on a system-by-system basis. Do not call the divisi until you need it, and then using strategic system breaks one can minimize double printing the unison passages.

If those are not possible in a given case, then cutaways may be the best alternative.

I don’t think you can cutaway one staff of a passage like that. Here, for example:

I can select one of the two staves in the divisi bar and make a manual cutaway, but I cannot select just one of the two staves in the bar before it – clicking in one staff gives me both.

You can if you enter the cutaway in the divisi part, and then move it:

Ah, of course, good call. Still, you’re left with something slightly misleading: Looking just at this page, based on the way things are labeled, I might think that the cellos are already divisi, with just the first division playing the first 4 bars and the second division joining in the fifth bar.

It would be nice if Dorico offered more options for this sort of thing, in score and parts.

True! It’s a little better with these kind of settings, but still, not totally convincing:

I totally agree!

I found a solution: making the unisson at the beginning of the system a divisi, which allows me to select the second part independently, which allows me to cut it away.

This will give me some work and attention for the part, but I have (almost) what I wanted.

Thanx guys

Does Cutaway work if Multi-bar rests are active? I seem to remember not. So that would scupper using it in parts.

One alternative would be to do it “Finale-style” – change the Violins to Single Players, and Add/Remove Staves as you want; but you’ll have to add the div. and unis. marks by hand.

I suppose it depends how frequent and complex the divisi passages are.

Unfortunately not.
