Unusual meters in contemporary music score

I just saw this option listed in Engraving Options. Creating something like this might help me. But I don’t know — how do I create a meter that’s basically 6/8, but with 2 in the numerator?

Oh i think I see! If I select this option, and just type 6/8, it will appear this way.

6/8 appears correctly with this option as a 2 numerator with a dotted quarter denominator. Does anyone know how to get 3/8 for instance to appear this way?

Doesn’t seem to work with 3/8 showing 1 dotted quarter.

What happens if you enter [3]/8 in the meter popover?

That’s fun!

So the overarching thing is: the brackets make it a “sum”?

The reason 6/8 reduces to 2/♩. and 3/8 does not reduce to 1/♩. is because 6/8 is treated as [3+3]/8 whereas 3/8 is treated as [1+1+1]/8.

That’s pretty similar to what I did in Finale with some Grainger pieces I was cleaning up. Glad to see some great ideas here as I transition to Dorico.
