Unwanted Rests - How to remove

Dorico provides wonderful freedom to compose in an infinite number of voices (and I am grateful!) ; but eventually bars like this may be scattered about in the score.

These rests relate to voices I often haven’t used for many bars. I cannot use “select all” - “control/cmd R” in a bar to remove them because that will also remove rests actually required.

This is only a very minor issue - but sometimes I miss them and they appear in PDFS or printed scores.

Is there a quick way to delete all “actually unwanted rests”

Have a look for this in Notations options for a start.

Edit: when tried on you file, it didn’t work as I expected.

But i noticed bar 114, with the extra rests, lacks a note, maybe thats related?

I think that requires the “Mind Reader™” plugin.

It looks like you need only three different voices for this piece, but you use 6 different ones, and created 13! (you can check in Play Mode).

I’m not sure, but this could explain why the Option @TonH is mentioning doesn’t work perfectly.

Common mistake, using Shift-V instead of V, when you already have several voices.

Yes I’m probably doing that. I love the way Dorico gives me as many voices as I want “in the heat of the moment” -but it would be nice if it trimmed them away afterwards.

I think @jesele deserved the Solution check as a matter of courtesy.

You can do the rationalisation yourself. (There are a number of threads describing ways to do it efficiently, depending on where you are starting from. Essentialy these are variations on filtering for voice(s) and changing them to a different voice. If a voice has no notes all the surplus rests disappear.

The unused voices here are remaining because Independent Voice Playback is enabled in Play Mode. If you disable it, save and close, re-open (and re-activate IVP), they’ll be removed.

Still too many voices, but less!

It might help if you show voice colors.

Here you have 3 voices, and three colors

Here you have three voices too, but a different voice is introduced, which shows as a different color. This could be a warning you added a voice involuntary.

Unfortunately without ‘Independent Voice Playback’ playback guitar harmonics won’t work. But Yes I guess I can toggle them off and on again to clear voices.
