Your Oboe (SO) expression map has C3 for Natural. Typo, I guess, it should be C0. That C3 is emitted at the start of playback.

Did you ever use the Add Staff Above/Below commands, enter some music on that staff, and then remove the staff? Removing a staff does not remove the notes on the staff. If this is your situation, try adding a staff to the trumpet and oboe staves and looking for notes.

I read that other entry, which was really useful, but it’s not working.

So having checked things out, I now know I never used add staff below/above command.

This phantom sound has only appeared since adding 12 bars at the beginning of the piece, and copying a flute part onto the trumpet line.

The quickest way for others to diagnose the problem is to post the Dorico project here. If confidentiality is a problem, use Save As… to save a copy of the file with a new name. Open the new file, check that the problem still occurs, delete all the notation you can see, check that the “phantom” not…
