Hi, I have a licence for Cubase 11 pro. I’m going to upgrade to the latest version when my new pc arrives spoon. To make it run do I need a dongle from usb cubase..The reason I ask is that I have a dongle that is missing it’s cover and i have no idea if it’s a cubase one (I need to replace whatever it is). My pc with cubsae 11 on it is in for repair so I cant test it out .. was wondering what I might need. Can it run using my Ilock usb? Bit confused. Would like to share a pic, but not sure how on this forum.

If you intend to install and use only Cubase 15 Pro, you don’t need the USB dongle. You only need it if you have software with the old license, such as Cubase 11 Pro, and VST instruments that you haven’t updated to the new license type and intend to install and continue using them.
Make sure you purchase the upgrade version compatible with your Cubase license.

If your Cubase 11 version is already registered in your account then you don’t need the USB Licenser at all to update to Cubase 15 and run it. Check your My Steinberg account and have a look. If it hasn’t been registered yet, there are options, too.
Are you guys sure that the USB dongle isn’t needed? As far as I know the the Cubase 11 license on the dongle needs to get changed to a Cubase 11 (upgraded to Steinberg licensing), will it not?
Yes. My understanding is in a case wher there’s no USB key available, the customer has to get in touch with SB support, and needs to have had the USB Elicenser registered in their SB account.
Hmm, although there is an entry in MySteinberg accounts -
the USB eLicenser should work just fine without that entry, no? I was under the impression that folks who last used their USB eLicensers before the transition to the new licensing system can still use it after the server’s been shut down. Isn’t this entry merely proof that you owned a Cubase license prior to the new licensing system? Like some sort of documentation that you were elegible to update to Cubase 12 onwards? I don’t know, TBH. Maybe the OP can shed some light on this IF the dongle with the missing cover actually IS a USB eLicenser…
Yes, that’s true. If you want to update from C11 to C15 Steinberg will surely ask for some kind of record/confirmation that you actually own a legit Cubase license to update from.
I think Johnny was referring to an existing USB eLicenser and whether or not it needs to be registered in order to use the old licenses that are on it. Since the USB eLicenser will not undergo any changes due to the shutdown of the servers it would imply that the eLCC still needs some sort of online confirmation from the account in order to use it. Does it work like this?
Two years later after the eLCC servers chewed on their last bytes and yet there are questions unanswered. Legendary.
This is all I could find on the subject. Seems to imply that the dongle is not required. But this raises the question of what happens to that licence on the dongle?
My opinion ( ha ha!) is that the dongle is required so that the licence on it can be updated to so that it can’t be sold.
Can I still upgrade my product from the eLicenser-based licensing to Steinberg Licensing?
Yes, upgrading an eLicenser-based license to a new Steinberg Licensing license requires the old license to be registered in your MySteinberg account. Redeeming the update/upgrade Download Access Code in the Steinberg Download Assistant will check the eligibility and provide the new license.
