Upgrade from 5.5.3 to Cubase 8.5

How cam I keep 5.5.3 when I upgrade to Cubase 8.5 on the sane PC

You can have both on the same machine at the same time (I have Cubase 6.5.5 and 8.5 Pro here). Cubase 8.5 will not harm your Cubase 5

Thank you for your help. So. Is it true both versions can operate on 1 license key dongle??? I heard that I need 2 separate versions with 2 key dongles.??? And when I upgrade to 8.5 it will overwrite my 5.5.3 So, how do I keep both knowing this. Thanks, John

Yes…there will only appear a licence for 8.5 but it allows any earlier version to work too.

I don’t know where you heard that but whoever said or wrote that is wrong.

No it won’t overwrite anything.

Can someone tell me how to open a bak file in Cubase 5.5.3. Thanks,John

rename it to the normal extension.

Hi, can you please explain further?

rename it to projectname.cpr

Or just open it from within Cubase

You can have both with the same dongle. But with time , if you are like me, you wont be interested to open the old 5.5 ( only for transfer at the beginning) hihihi

This should work:
Go to the Open dialogue.
At this point change the “Files of type” to either .bak or Any type. All suitable files will now be visible
Pick your file and load it
Re-save it as a regular project file (.cpr)
