UR824 Input Gain Knobs

OK so used UR44 and UR22 for many years but know wanted more inputs so picked up the UR824.

I am aware that there is a DSPMIXFX app that can be used without DAW (on Mac M3). However without that installed I have an issue (or it’s something I’ve not experienced in the past) in that no matter which inputs I choose the signal passes straight through the UR824. With the input gain knobs at minimum the signals are present. The leds are green and if I turn up the source output then the less clip. I never had this on the previous interfaces, when the knobs where fully down there was no signal getting through at all.
So I have signal on 7 and 8. If I raise one of the channels the sound is raised equally across speakers like mono but pretty sure the signal is stereo.
If I pull one of the cable out I again see that it’s still playing across both monitors. This is running directly through the interface with no DAW open and no DSP app. So my thought is that somehow all channels are centred or perhaps mono. I have looked at manual and online videos and nothing is clear to me. Chris Selim (great channel, Dom and Chris my goto YouTube Guides for Cubase). He is able to show the DSP or hardware settings in the mix console. I belie he goes to racks and enables hardware. I think this is an older video as racks is no longer in Cubase 13 (or it’s not called the same). No matter I can get a panel open that shows the hardware, however it’s ticked and greyed out). Even though it’s ticked I am not able to open this up in the mix console. I can view audio hardware settings that shows output routing but it’s basic and does not have any pan or stereo settings.

Do I need to instal DSPmixfx or instal and disable it or is there a setting to only route through DAW?

This is the reason I have hardware synths sitting doing nothing as I can’t get this to work.

As usual any help appreciated. Sorry for lack of screen shots as newish to MAC and what was once simple is now not
