Using arpeggiation in the score editor

Hi! That’s me again with score editor questions.

I got two staves for the piano and I’m trying to write an arpeggiated chord on the first beat of a bar. It includes 3 notes on the lower stave using 2 voices and 3 notes on the upper stave also using 2 voices. The problem is that I can’t draw one arpeggiation line across both staves, actually the editor allows me to draw just one short line in front of one of the voices on one stave. And the line is not editable. When I try to draw a second line on the other voice - the first one just disappears. Any ideas?

That is indeed currently a limitation of arpeggio (and glissandi) lines in the new Score Editor. They are created at the time of clicking at the position in the stave, and this mechanism doesn’t allow to specify different stave for the end of the line.

It should however in theory be possible to have two lines at the same position in different staves. I’ll need to investigate what’s going wrong here.

Hi there, is there any news about this issue?

The news are not that good. Steinberg reacted in another post where I listed all my expectations of the future fixes and updates for the score editor. The answer is - they are aware of all the issues of this score editor but we shouldn’t expect anything soon. Seems like the score editor doesn’t have a high priority here…

It isn’t true - from what I’ve seen as an outside observer, the score editor seems very important and is being treated that way by Steinberg developers, but there are only so many hours to do things. There were quite a few enhancements in Cubase 15 directly related to the score editor. You can see the progress being made.

Well, to me - the only significant update to the score editor with v15 is jazz articulations. That’s great but not too much for a new version…

The expression maps updates were huge for the Score Editor. It was a big headline feature. And the font/paragraph styles dialog was implemented so you can change the formatting of various elements - many people were complaining before that they couldn’t make the chord symbols larger and now they can do that quite easily.

IMHO the things that you mentioned could be done after solving lots of small but more basic issues about the editor. Like this arpepeggiation issue that is discussed in this thread. And there’s a lot more…

I made a dedicated post with a list of such issues - Cubase 15 Score Editor: My Long-Awaited Fixes That Are Still Missing

Really? I can see people saying that about the font/paragraph choices, but you think they should have left expression maps as they were for another 1-2 years while improving the score editor?

I think expression maps improvements were the top voted thread…

It’s so strange how some people expect so much for so little money so quickly. :exploding_head:

Cubase 15 update from 14 is $99. Very affordable IMO. Tons of new features and improvements, well worth the money. They are adding things to the score editor, but there are only so many resources available. Steinberg employees do not drive Ferraris and live in mansions. All of them could get far better paying jobs in Silicon Valley but they don’t. The score editor will get improvements, it just got a new engine from the Dorico team last year, after years and years of planning and investment, thank goodness. Give Steinberg some credit folks. Geez. How many DAW score editors even come close? How many DAW developers have a sister notation app as good as Dorico? Come on now. Yes, it needs improvements and they will come. But let’s give them some credit for how good it is now.

Cheers and nothing personal. Have a nice day.
