Using Groove Agent - need one bar with different time signature in the middle of a tune

I am working on a tune that has two extra beats between bar 9 and bar 10.

The tune is a basic 4/4 but near the beginning there is this oddity. You could say I need to add a bar of 2/4 in there, or the way I have it written is that (only) bar 9 is in 6/4.

Any suggestions?

Insert a signature track and change bar 9 to 6/4.

@ASM
Signature tracks or only available in Cubase Artist and Pro (I usually forget this…:wink: ) . However, it is also possible to mark signature changes in other versions but without individual click-patterns which are only available in Artist and Pro.

Adding to what @ASM said: With regard to 6/4 or 4/4 + 2/4 - I’d also decide that based on the metric stress pattern:

  • Stress on beats 1 & 4 then probably 6/4
  • Stress on 1 & 3 and 1 > probably 4/4 + 2/4

Yeah, I have Cubase Elements 14 so I didn’t know about a ‘Signature track’. I am using the Groove Agent, and I don’t really understand what you mean “click-patterns”. Although this tune would fall into the category you described for 4/4 + 2/4 I think in the long run it would be better to make the one measure 6/4 so that the phrases will all be 8 bars.

The tune is Sun Touch by Herbie Hancock.

By the way, I love that EMT 140 reverb. When I worked at Sweetwater the dude came in from Universal Audio to show the plug-ins. I was so taken by their EMT 140 plug-in that I eventually bought a UA Arrow just so I could run it. I have a MXL V6 plugged into that. I had to get a Windows laptop with Lightning Bolt ports so I could run the Arrow. The UA is just odd enough that it won’t work with apps like JamKazam, so I have to run the output of the Arrow into a Steinberg UR22 in order to use some apps. So yeah, I really like that EMT 140 enough to buy all that stuff to run it. I spent an hour with the Bricasti reverb ($4,000) trying to get the same sound as that EMT 140…

You can assign different click patterns to each signature in Artist and Pro:

Ah, I had to think twice. I wasn’t sure what you meant by this statement but I get it now. Whatever serves your needs best. Noone will come and check if you picked the correct measure :wink:

So with my lowly Cubase Elements 14 is this possible?

Yes, no problem, it’s also possible with Cubase Elements (which is a powerful version, too!):
Open the tempo track editor (Ctrl/Cmd + T) and set the signature changes accordingly in the signature display using the pencil tool.

OK, thanks for the tip. I found the “tempo editor” and changed bar 9 to 6/4 and then bar 10 back to 4/4, but Groove Agent just keeps jamming in 4/4 regardless. I guess I will have to add another Groove Agent track for the one 6/4 measure?
