Using templates to number exercises

Starting to write my first book in Dorico. Very much a newbie. In this photo, I edited the page to include the flow number which will be the same as the exercise number. I always want it positioned as you can see with item 1. However, this is a change from the default template. For item 2, I attempted to position the flow number so it will line up nicely but of course now I can’t see any music. There must be some way for each new flow to have the flow number appear nicely aligned. I suspect I’m missing something obvious here.

This sounds “ominous”
Is the book “25 pages and 30 music samples” or “250 pages and 300 music samples”?

Do you mean something like this?

Depending on how large the numbering will be (and the font size) the margin might be adjusted

One workaround to always have the numbers aligned, regardless of vertical spacing or page layout, is to create one player per flow. Rename each player as 1, 2, 3, etc., then use staff labels to display the numbers.

That way, no matter what changes you make later, the number will always appear to the left of the staff at the beginning.

It requires this setting in Layout Options:

Brilliant idea!

It’s not mine, it’s something I read somewhere here on the forum a while ago (sorry, I can’t remember whose idea it was! I think there are several threads dedicated to this situation.)

Thanks for your reply. Actually this is my 17th book overall but the previous 16 were written using Finale. In terms of formatting, this one should be more simple than many previous books. It will be a progressive series of sight-reading exercises to help students learn to read in 6/8 time. Yes, the numbering you show is spot on. I’m not sure how you achieved this, however. On a side note, I’d possible that I will want to reorder the exercises which I assume would mean reordering the flows. Will the numbers reorder as well?

This is a clever solution but I’m not sure it will work in my case. As I mentioned in my reply to @Mats_Frendahl I may want/need to change the order of the exercises.

When I would write books using Finale, I would number exercises using rehearsal numbers. I also plan to look into this.

An impressive output!
I encl. my small test. Yes, rearranging the flows will keep the numbers. Here I swapped Flow 1 and 2 and the numbering remains, but the contents “shift”

I assume you want to keep the 1,2,3, numbering, whatever order the flow comes in.
I added “Flowtitle” which could be nice to have for an exercise heading.

I’m sure there are more clever solutions than this, and your additional needs on the page layout might require updating the frames, etc. But perhaps it can give you some idea. Books in Dorico are not my speciality.

This was the closest I could get, with the flowNumber token, changing the flow heading template.
@Mats_Frendahl otherwise nice example doesn’t work if you need several flows on the same page.

@jesele Do you have Dorico 7? :open_mouth:

Ops, Dorico 8 here. I am from the future.

Indeed.
I’m not good with Flows/Books in Dorico (I never use Flows in my projecs). I much prefer external programs. More flexibility and variations and “raw power”.

Me neither, but I thought I’d also try anyway.

Then you’ll need to reorder the player’s order in Setup mode and use the Renumber function (Setup menu?) so that it matches your flows… Not easy, prone to errors, but will work in the end.

Yes, this nails it! Thank you. As you were setting up the templates, the actual music wasn’t visible. How did you manage to position it correctly? I’m guessing that if, for some reason, there was text at the top of one page pushing the music lower, the number would not reposition itself, yes?

If you don’t need Rehearsal Marks to actually be used as Rehearsal Marks, that can be another easy automatic way to do it. I posted my settings for this in this thread, but it makes it simple to automatically do stuff like this:

Did you use a template for this?

No template. I just edited some Layout Options and the Flow Heading template.
