VCA tracks have been introduced in 2014 (Cubase Pro 8) and have been broken ever since. Users are left on their own without any kind of warning in the documentation or any official statement how to circumvent the danger of losing a mix. Moreover, there hasn’t been a reaction from Steinberg if or when this feature will ever be fixed.
Although there are countless threads about the VCA feature being broken there hasn’t been a dedicated feature request to fix & improve VCAs. It is not accetable to carefully maneuver around the potential pitfalls using tribal knowledge/workarounds that are nowwhere to be found in the documentation. Moreover, these workarounds are not only cumbersome to implement in the workflow, there is also no guarantee that they will keep you from losing your mix. VCAs should be improved in a way that they are predictable and can be handled without jumping through hoops.
As much as I love this DAW for all its brilliant features and improvements over the years and as much as I appreciate Steinberg’s work: The handling of the VCA feature is not exactly something where Steinberg has shone…
Hopefully, a dedicated feature request helps to attract more attention after 12 years. If votes matter then this might be a good opportunity to leave one.
