"Verification pending" after Dorico 5 update

I upgraded from 3.5 to Pro 5 a week or so ago. It appears to be working.
I now receive the email copy attached.
I click on start verification and nothing happens.
This really is heart attack material.
I have a prt finished project here.
Can anyone please help? What on earth must I do?

I doubt that is a genuine Email Address from Steinberg! Seems to me to be some Scam Mail. Be careful!

Please enable 2 Factor Authentification in your Steinberg Account!

I’m afraid that doesn’t help. How do I “enable 2 Factor Authentification” in my Steinberg account. This has been my email address since 1996. How do I get to my Steinberg account.
I feel like giving up now asking for my licence to be cancelled and asking for a refund of £132. It took me about 3 hours to get the upgrade done. Now I have another evening’s work.
If I look on the Steinberg Activation Manage it says “Activated”

EDIT: probably I was too suspicious/cautious, but better verify “one time too much than one time to less” (I think in english: look before you leap?)

as @Ruediger_K says, this is with all probability a phishing attempt. Don’t, click on anything in that email!!.

Generally to fast check if an email is “real” or a “scam”, and how to handle it:

  1. verify the address of the sender [EDIT: opps that is you]: it has some improbable email address and not corresponding to the service they suppose to be?
  2. if they don’t write your name in the text (such as “Hallo mr. Ivor Stuart…”) it means the sender doesn’t know you, so it confirms that this is a phishing attempt
  3. ask directly to the service asking clarification (without using any buttons or links of the suspect email!!), as you did, writing here on the Steinberg/Dorico Forum
  4. if the officials (Steinberg in this case) confirm that this mail is not from them, put the sender address into the blacklist of your email provider
  5. delete the email and empty the bin

Guys, I think he took a screenshot of a reply to the Steinberg email that he started to compose. Looks legit.

And I notice on the Steinberg Activation Manager the status is “Verification Pending”.
(You’d think they’d link something up so I could do it in this Activation Manager but…no)

Could you post a screenshot of the eLicenser Control Center showing your Dorico 3.5 license? Is it marked by an annotation in parenthesis?

Ok, the entry looks good. Are there several Dorico licenses present in the Activation Manager or is there only the single one with the “pending verification” notice?

Only the one.
The Activation manager turned it to “Activated”. This really is the most puzzling software. It definitely said “activation pending” before.

Yes, the email looks legit to me.

I have to admit it’s the weirdest, most awkward software I’ve ever had to install. The instructions assume one’s a technical whizz. For simple people like me it needs structured English like a program specification. What originally attracted me to Dorico was that most of its usage instructions are like this: clear step by step. I mean, given it’s the best there is out there, it’s just surprising it’s so complex to install.

I still don’t know if the Activation Manager showing Activated means everything’s ok, or Dorico will stop working in 7 days. Nothing has appeared to say everything’s ok.
I suppose I’d better contact Paypal just in case.

I do seem to recall that eLicenser-based installation was tougher.

@dspreadbury, does this communication with @IvorStuart look legit?

I never had trouble with VSL and the eLicenser. (I know my VSL licences are still there but they’re inactive now I’m on iLok.)

Yes, it is legitimate. When you update from an old eLicenser-based product, there are two steps to the procedure: you receive a temporary Steinberg Licensing-based license for the new version, and this is only made permanent when you have demonstrated that you have a qualifying eLicenser-based license. (When your “old” version uses Steinberg Licensing, there’s only one step, because both your “old” and “new” versions are on the same system.)

You can do these two steps at different times, for example if you’re installing the new version on a different computer to the old, or you don’t have your USB-eLicenser with you at that very moment. But at some point before the temporary license runs out, you need to verify your existing eLicenser license so that it can be marked as updated, and your new license can be made permanent.

The good news, Ivor, is that your license is showing as having been verified, and you don’t need to worry. I am going to go back over the posts in this thread and remove personally identifiable information for your protection, so that is why posts will appear to have been edited.

My pleasure, Ivor. I’m sorry you had a hard time dealing with this update. The good news is that should you choose to update to another version of Dorico in the future, it will go much more smoothly, because things are much simpler with Steinberg Licensing.
