Vertical alignment ONLY perfect with multiple players/instruments

Hi all,

when using the band template and therefore having multiple players/instruments, the vertical alignment of bars and its notes works perfectly, meaning the position of a note in its bar fits perfectly to the note in the bar above.
But this is only true with multiple players, why doesnt this work when having only one player?

Thanks

multiple play template:

Single player template (leadsheet):

Your first example shows one system with multiple players, one player per staff, like a score. In this kind of layout, rhythmic positions align vertically.

But your second example shows two different systems for the same player. In published music, the spacing in each bar is dependent on the durations of notes in the bar so it is unlikely that bars on different systems will all be the same width, which would allow rhythmic positions on the different systems to line up.

Barlines of different systems should not even be vertically aligned to prevent visual confusion with staves of the same system.
In the words of Elaine Gould (Behind Bars, p. 489):

Barlines on adjacent systems should not align. If barlines do coincide, systems containing like material look too similar and the eye is liable to skip a system; in a score, adjacent staves will look as if they are part of the same system.

BTW, at least in reductive cases, this is something that Dorico doesn’t take into account; if you fill a sequence of measures with quarter notes on the same pitch, for example, all of the systems look exactly the same. One of the engraving texts (don’t remember which) gives a similar example with running 16ths to show how things should be slightly offset. It would be nice if Dorico could recognize coincident barlines and make some slight adjustments, but this is probably very complicated.

Thanks very much for your feedback

I use sheet music in order to read, analyze, compare songs, their structure, musical phrases, lyrics, chords and so on. Therefore a perfect vertical alignment like in the band template is 1000 times better and useful to do that.

Maybe my workaround would be to just enter the notes/lyrics into the band template and print it.

Question: The lines that connect the systems, is there a way to delete them or make them white/invisible?

Thanks again

Create a system break, then use the property hide systemic barline.
