Vertical collision with system text

(Also posted in FB group).

XML import. (It’s for a bass player who will also be narrating). I’ve reset the layout - there are no added page or frame breaks. Can I get Dorico to automatically leave space for system text? I’ve searched similar topics here but don’t properly understand the replies.

Have you checked in Engrave Mode (Properties Panel) the Avoid collisions property?

Hi Charles. Yes I’ve experimented with that. It shuffles it a bit, but doesn’t resolve the issue.

Have you also reset the vertical spacing?

Hi @James_Manson, can you post a cut-down version of your Dorico project, to suggest you what to do based on context?

Hi Christian. Thank you for the offer of help. I’m now quite far down the road of adding frame breaks to create sufficient space. I’d been hoping I’d overlooked something which would make space automatically, but it doesn’t seem to exist beyond workarounds which create other problems. Maybe creating boxed system text for handling narration is the wrong approach? Anyway I’m too far on with my solution now to post the offending page. But thank you anyway.

Did you see the reply I gave you two hours ago in the FB group?

Hi Hugo, I have now and thank you for taking the time to reply. I tried that but it didn’t resolve the issue.

My random guess is that you have set casting off for this layout to too many systems per page.

I wasn’t aware that Dorico automatically made room for multi-line text. I’d be happy to learn otherwise.

I believe it does.

Good to know. That will make some types of work easier than it was in the past. Thanks.

(But the OP’s example was between systems of a part. Does that work the same?)

Was your example with regular text or system text? I had inconsistent results experimenting with system text. Sometimes it collided, sometimes it didn’t.

Those were both staff text.
