Vertical position of dynamics -- bounding box?

Hi all,

here is something that has been bothering me a bit. Take a look at this image:

The positioning of the second set of dynamics is lining up nicely, but the first one is not.
I suppose this has to do with the fact that the Minimum distance below staff (2 3/8 sp) and Minimum distance to other items (1/2 sp) is calculated differently.

Has anyone of you found a way to line up the first set of dynamics without resorting to manual adjustments?

(Ideally I think the pp p mp would be a bit further down, and the mf f ff a bit up).

Grouping dynamics is not an option?

No, not in this case; the image is just a test. What happens in real life is that I have set the distance to something that works for the p-dynamics:

But then I often find that the f-dynamics need to be moved closer to the stems so I do manual adjustments:

Here minimum distance to other items is set to 7/8.

The dynamics are aligned properly if the minimum distance below staff for immediate dynamics in Engrave Options > Dynamics are set to minimum 3 5/8 spaces

Thanks, that covers some situations. But if you have this –

I guess you have to go for a combination of grouping dynamics and a suitable default distance setting.

Yes, I guess so. And manual adjustments.

Just to be clear – I do not have any situations with the dynamics lined up like that, that is just an illustration of the settings.

What I am wishing for is the distance being calculated not to the bounding box of the whole symbol, but to the actual whitespace below. That would make the mf / f / ff symbols come closer to the stems.

Dynamics are indeed positioned according to their bounding rectangle, not according to a bounding polygon that takes into account where characters with ascenders are found. Dorico at present simply doesn’t have the capability to do this, though of course it’s something we could potentially add in a future version.
