Vertical Spacing after XML import

I am working on an import using XML that was created in Finale. This piece easily fits on two pages. I’ve read the Forum answers to similar questions. The Vertical Justification in Layout Options doesn’t seem to have any impact. Is it possible there is a hidden instruction after the third system on the first page that creates this space? If I try to decrease the size, the third system automatically changes the vertical space between the two clefs to 1.82”. I have no problem sharing the file if that helps answer this question. This effort was a practice session.

Thanks for any advice you may have. I’m still a novice at Dorico. Oh! I now have Dorico 6.

Hi @Connie_Stauffer, yes please upload the Dorico project. (You show only two pages in your screenshot)

What I can see:

  • you have manual Staff Spacing everywhere (which need to be reset in Engrave mode, menu Engrave>Staff Spacing>Reset Layout)

  • you have extreme large music frame margins (probably the cause of your issue), that you can re-set with the default (factory) values in Layout options>Page Setup>Music Frame Margins. These are the default values:

  • then you can adjust the other global options (note spacings and Minimum Gaps for example)…: if you upload the file someone will tell you the two clicks you need to have a perfect layout.

This is after I tried your suggestions. It’s improved, but the 2nd page is crowded and doesn’t need to be.

Thanks for any suggestions. Connie

I don’t know if this is better for you. Here’s roughly what I did:

  • removed the page override on page 1;
  • applied the First template to page 1 (Layout Options);
  • modified the First template so it matches what you had done (same fairly large copyright frame, copyright font set to 12 pts in Paragraph Styles); frame vertical alignment to “Center” (you might prefer bottom, which is the default)
  • slightly increased the top and bottom margins (they’re still small, but yours were even smaller!); and applied the same values for left and right page (they were different)
  • slightly reduced the top frame margin, and lowered the first justification threshold (staves & systems) in Layout Options so that it applies both pages

I indeed had to force the 5th system onto the first page (“Make into Frame”), and I’m not quite sure why that wasn’t done automatically.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the input. I’m still working on my copy so I can learn these things. As for the margins, I didn’t create them and nothing I did seemed to change them. I will study this effort a bit more. The song has been finished in Finale for some time. I was using it as an exercise.

Thanks so much!

Connie
