I thought I had finally finished the 27 parts of my orchestral piece, but to my great dismay my last control round showed that Dorico completely messed up my vertical spacing on many pages after having worked on other parts. I had carefully adjusted vertical spacing, frame breaks and system breaks where necessary due to pageturning and other things.
One of many examples:
And there are no overrides on this page:
Does anybody know why this happened, and how to avoid it? What can I do so that my new adjustments don’t get messed up again after opening other parts to control them??
The red tint lines show that manual Staff Spacing adjustments have been made to this layout.
It’s very unlikely that Dorico would have applied these itself; or that changes to one layout would affect another layout.
However, if Properties are set to “Global”, then manual adjustments to the position of things like text, Tempi, and dynamics will affect all layouts.
Your page is over-full, anyway; so you might need to change the system-to-system gap value in Layout Options, if that’s typical for the layous.

Yes, that’s my point: I had carefully adjusted the vertical spacing in the parts where necessary - a few pages are that full in order to enable pageturns, but most pages aren’t. After finishing all the parts, I discovered when opening the parts I had edited previously, on some pages, Dorico messed up the manual vertical spacing as shown in my screenshot. II wonder how that’s possible, that the vertical spacing in the double bass part changes while I work on editing a completely different part.
I am extremely careful about “Local” and “Global” properties, since I made myself problems with this in an earlier project ;-).
So I really don’t know what has happened here, and I hope it doesn’t happen again while readjusting the layout…
Can you point out exactly what changes are not yours?
However, as said, I think that when the page fullness is well over 100%, then Dorico has difficulty calculating spacing.
well, of course the changes were mine, but not in the messed up way with some staves squeezed together and some huge spaces between others. I restored it as it should look now:
So it seems like Dorico simply completely changed the vertical spacing on sopme pages without me doing anything in that particular part, but working on completely different parts.
I can’t say that I’ve ever experiences anything like this; so I’ll leave it for the developers to comment.
You might like to upload a Diagnostic Report (from the Help menu); and state the date and time when things went wrong, so that they can look at the logs and see what was happening.
