Vertical spacing issues

Good evening, I was using Layout option vertical spacing inter-system gap, but on the second page the gaps are much shorter than on the first. And when I’ve been changing the number it doesn’t behaved as it should. What am I doing wrong?

The left page is justified by default: the systems are spaced farther apart to fill the page. The right page is not stretched because it’s not full enough to trigger the threshold in Layout Options > Vertical Justification > “… when frame is at least [n]% full”.

Is all of the music in? If not, just keep entering it and the layout will improve. Or if that’s the length of it, you’ll want to make some choices about how best to lay it out.

Ben posted his very nice vertical justification guide at the bottom of this post:

Thanks for your answer, it made me aware of the function of vertical justification. I’m not quite there, but big step forward. Thanks again:)

Hi kaposi,

In case you missed this video (it was posted in another thread) I would strongly urge you to watch it along with anyone else new to Dorico. It’s well worth the hour long tutorial. John goes into great detail about vertical spacing. The concepts are really important to understand going forward. Without them you will have difficulty getting your scores spaced out the way you want them. If you understand the principles of the vertical spacing options, you can very quickly get the results you want. I even watched it again yesterday as a refresher.

If you look in the video notes, John has itemized different areas, mostly from the layout options dialogue box. Vertical justification happens at around 36 minutes into the video. There are also links to other helpful videos in the notes.

Enjoy!

The objective is to not do any manual staff adjustments unless absolutely necessary. Nearly all spacing issues can be resolved with tweaking of the various engraving and layout parameters (sometimes even just reducing Space Size [Rastral size] just a couple of ticks can make overlapping staves fall into place nicely). Watch the videos – it’s time well-invested, and will save you hours of frustration and unfruitful work.

The first page is justified to fill the whole page. The second uses the ideal gaps.

I have found that the fastest way to get a regular spacing that is slightly wider than the ideal gaps is to go to go to engrave mode and to make the music frame smaller.

Yes that works but then you have an override on that page and any changes you make to the Page Template will not update that page.
