I just opened Dorico 6 for the first time today (I have been on Dorico 4 for much too long) and I can already see huge improvements. However, I have one very simple question that I can’t seem to solve after multiple queries: when I create new blank measures with the Bar popup, they all come up completely empty rather than with a whole measure rest (as in Dorico 4). I suspect this is just a setting, but I can’t seem to find it in any of the Notations, Engraing, or Layout options. Where is the magic switch?
Ah, that was it. The section iin question is repeated and in 4/4 with a quarter note pick-up. I used ‘Remove Rests’ in the first bar of the section to remove the quarter note rest on beat 4 before the repeat bar, and then added some new bars after this last bar (which had a repeat bar to enter music for the enext section. Based on your guidance, I looked at the Properties window and found ‘Ends voice” checked. When I unchecked it, the rest on beat 4 reappeared and the following empty bars were populated by whole rests. I then removed the beat 4 rest in the last measure of the first section.
It seems like a bit of a convoluted path, but now that i know it, I will be able to address the issue quickly.
You have to realise that all the Remove Rests command does is activate Ends voice and Starts voice properties on the items that bookend the selection. But those items will not be linked in any other way, so if you then move them around it can cause a mismatch.
