VHorns with VEPro setup?

Is anyone using Acoustic Samples VHorns with Dorico by hosting them in VEPro? I wouldn’t think this would be difficult to do, but I’m obviously missing a step somewhere as I can’t get them working.

  1. Dorico connects to my VHorns VEPro instance fine. All my other VEPro instances for other non-VHorns VSTs are playing back correctly.

  2. When I attempt playback in Dorico, I can see the levels changing in the VHorns instruments in the VEPro Mixer, there’s just no audio playback. Again, all other VEPro VSTs are audibly playing back fine.

  3. I think I have all the channels matching correctly, but perhaps not. Is there another place where they need to match besides here? (And that also matches my Dorico Endpoint Config obviously)

Nothing is muted, either in Dorico, MIR, or VEPro, so that shouldn’t be an issue. I have a feeling that this is just a simple user error, maybe in the UVI Workstation setup, as I’ve neglected to change something, but I’m sort of stumped. Any ideas? Does anyone else have a configuration for these that is working? Thanks for any advice!

None of the channel strips in VEPro have an output assigned (unless you masked it out for privacy reasons…)

Jeez, I knew it had to be something stupid on my end. That’s it, thanks!

You probably set everything up defaulting to Master, then you deleted Master. That will leave anything routed to it with no output.

@FredGUnn Recently I have been preparing the use of AcousticSamples VHorns and VWinds as VE Pro (VEP) instance(s) on PC for Dorico (D5). I found some peculiarities (bugs?) when developing this setup:

  • after setting the MIDI port and channel number in VEP, some (not all) instruments did not produce sound, until I set the UVI MIDI in channel to Omni (as is the case for some Kontakt instruments);
  • in the D5 expression map I tested the use of brass mutes, assigning a CC controller. Activating and changing the mutes worked, but not the return to open playing (no mute CC value 0 = open as expression map entry);
  • I implemented a partial MIDI mapping in the instruments. However, I could not save/export/import this MIDI map (as I’m used for SWAM), so had to program each individual instrument separately; most cumbersome I find;
  • I used one VEP stereo master out, and routed all instrument channels to this master. This stereo pair will return audio to D5; I do all the balancing and FX in the VEP instance.

Hope this helps. And thanks for all the invaluable information you have been sharing on this forum!

Hmm, setting the channel specifically seemed to work for me, so I didn’t run into that issue.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don’t think I tested that, but will try tonight.

I thought about doing that, and initially had everything going to a Master which caused my original issue, but ended up doing them individually. I mostly have the general levels set in MIR, but can quickly adjust in VEPro too.

I sort of came to a realization that I think jazz section playing is more believable with several different VSTs in the section. I guess that makes sense as in any real section you’ll have very different sounds, personalities, and instruments. I’m still playing around a bit but definitely finding playback a bit more realistic that way.
