Vibe-coding is really changing software development. All of Adobe’s apps have already been cloned… multiple times. I wonder how this will affect Dorico in the future. Implementing user-requested features should be a much easier process for a small team. Or would you rather vibe-code your own notation software, for example, focused exclusively on engraving?

Oh spare me. I’d rather use Dorico, thank you.

The Adobe clones are only partial. It is a misrepresentation to say otherwise.

It’s a misrepresentation to say that the clones are only partial, since they still miss a few features today. And I mean “today” literally, since the speed of the development is insane. And they are also Open Source and work on Linux. [Crafting Apps: open-source creative tools — ArtCraft](https://getartcraft.com/apps)

You can deny this new reality as much as you like, but will you not use Cantai, just because it’s AI?

This I nonsense.

It was only yesterday that I read up on the topic, and yes, all the menu items in the cloned photoshop might be there, but merely about 25% do any work at all. And yes, there was word of 1.800 tests being green, but that’s nothing for an app that big. Andif a test only tests if a menu item is there, well, that’s all it tests.

</div>

And don’t forget about the 80-20-rule: The first 80% are the easy ones.

But I’ll happily admit that I probably only use about 10% of what Photoshop can do - and probably there are many free apps out there that would have only this reduced set of features - and have been out there for a long time.

I agree about the 80/20 rule, but I am talking about a vibe-coding development process, not a notion that you would write a single prompt, and get a 100% result.
Vibe-coding requires human guidance, it simply offloads the time consuming aspect. Programming has been assisted by large code libraries for decades. This is a natural progression.

The Dorico team hardly ever discuss their development methods on this forum, and I think that’s for the better. Who knows, maybe they’re secretly using Vibe already, but we’ll never know (and frankly, I don’t even want to know).

My own experience of getting AI to do the coding is that you can get so far, then you ask it to do one more thing, and it breaks everything that it’s already done.

And when you ask it to correct errors, they still keep cropping up – often the same error in different places, because it’s using the same syntax when it rewrites.

If you want to vibecode your own notation software then go right ahead, nobody is stopped you from doing so. I see no reason why the rest of us should all go on our own personal AI notation softwares that will certainly be missing features when we already have Dorico, and musescore is free and open source.

Interesting. I have a lot of experience with Astra Work using Python for scripting Glyphs (which has full Python access). It may not get it right the first time, but if an API is fully documented, it is very reliable. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to get a robust SMuFL metadata .json, since the scripts on GitHub are outdated. I was also successful with rewriting a .doricolibrary file.

I had a front-row seat watching a friend of mine singlehandedly vibe-code a very impressive bit of software over the past two weeks using the programming language Go… and developed almost entirely through LLMs. He’s a very skilled coder, which was certainly needed at times, but he said it’s a crazy time to be in the game. New updates rolling out every 20–30 minutes, feedback given mostly as plain English, spoken into a microphone. He said a few years ago this would have taken a team of people probably nine months to do.

I hope this will finally end the era of buggy software, where a developer has to choose between patching bugs and new features. A human is still needed, but the efficiency allows to focus on the big picture.

Exactly, I will not use Cantai because it’s AI.

It’s interesting how quickly words like “denial” are brought into these discussions, as if refusing to embrace progress must necessarily stem from inability to accept reality. Progress is not a predetermined destination, it’s a continuous series of choices about direction, whe re we as a community decide where to go and not to go. If, to use an extreme example just to illustrate, progress meant starting a war to secure more resources, we should choose not to pursue it. And to get back on topic, if musicians (not to mention Dorico developers) are starting to be replaced by AI, we can choose not to support such a development.

Technological advancement doesn’t necessarily constitute progress. The fact that somethin can be done doesn’t mean it must be done.

Getting away from the immediate context of the OP’s focus, of course, but since we’re lapsing into sweeping “philosophical” generalizations of “the AI-‘problem’”:

Would you, under circumstances I hope you never face!, refuse the care of a physician whose advanced imaging is based on AI, as is increasingly the case? Or is this somehow specific to music-making being “tainted” for you?

There’s so much swirling rhetoric around this vague and often poorly defined category/concept of AI that I struggle to understand people’s positions at times.

The use of and progress of AI in medical care, research and diagnostics is nothing short of amazing. I’d welcome any use of AI in any situation that helps mankind, including myself, overcome any challenges, scientific research, improving lives of disabled, climate change research; countless areas that will greatly benefit from AI. I’m only objecting to generative AI being used to create art.

I’m retired now, but I have roughly 40 years of professional work as an illustrator, painter, graphic designer, writer, musician and producer. All of these fields are now threatened in various ways by generative AI. It’s something I consider crucial to oppose, as it’s destroying a culture that has served mankind since the dawn of humanity and has no need of being replaced by AI. Quite the contrary, I’d argue: given all the difficulties we face in the world today, creativity will be part of what helps preserve our sanity.

This has now drifted too far off topic, so I don’t want to encourage further debate. Although I’m kinda happy that in pretty much every topic where AI is touched upon in creative circumstances, this debate comes up, which kinda proves my point. We’re concerned, and we should be.
