Video shall start before the first bar of music (score)

I already tried asking this on the English and German Dorico Facebook Pages, but unfortunately didn’t get a response:

How do I do this? Neither the help pages nor the (non-existent) videos explain how to set up a video so that it starts before the music begins—that is, before measure 1 of the score.

The roughly 6-second video intro is intended to serve as a cue for the conductor.

I realize that, theoretically, I could insert a 6/4 bar at 60 bpm without music during this (6-second) intro. By the way, the offset in the video properties can only be set to a positive value—it can’t be set below zero.

Does anyone perhaps have a simple and clean solution for this?

Thanks in advance…

I don’t think it’s possible since you can’t set a negative offset in the video properties panel. I think inserting a bar is the only option. I could be wrong, though. Maybe a new first Flow with the 6/4 bar, then attach the video to both flows, and offset it 6 seconds on the second flow. Also Playback Options->Timing ->Gap between flows to zero. Just tried, and seem to work. Maybe just extra work.

Thnks, I’ll try…

Yes, it works. But it could be a little more user-friendly.

Thank you!

Just as a thought experiment:

An alternative might to add bars in the begin, reset bar number at the real bar #1 and hide those first bars (cutaway maybe?)

Agreed.

Jesper

It worked with the extra flow, BUT now I have no idea how to handle the time code. It should start at zero in the 2nd flow on the score in bar 1.

Because of the 6 seconds (6/4) in flow 1 the time code in flow 2 starts at 00:00:06:00. But the video has time code 00:00:00:00.

Maybe I try the alternative TonH mentioned.

Can’t you set the time code start to zero in the video properties for the 2:nd flow video?

Jesper

Yes, but then it starts with the 6 “pre-seconds”. The same like in the 1st flow.

Ah, yes, sorry, just tried. Bummer.

Jesper

Just curious, did you find a solution?

Jesper

nope. still in research…

Could you export the audio and do it in Logic/Cubase or Reaper instead? Or do you also need the score? I tried in Logic by dragging the video 6 seconds before bar 1.

Jesper

Thanks for the suggestion. I need the score. Unfortunately, Cubase (which I have) isn’t helpful for this. It needs to be notated in Dorico.

Hi @Dennisqn, here my attempt using the method suggested by @jesele, with a little variation: using a duplicate of the video with the first 6 seconds trimmed.
(I am not an expert about video or timecode, so sorry if this is not what you need).

  • Set the playback gap between flows to 0

  • You can load your video in flow 1 (which contains one bar in 6/4 at q=60): this will display the intro cue of 6 seconds.

  • Then make a duplicate of your video and trim the first 6 seconds (with a software of your choice), so it starts exactly where the music should start: you can attach this to flow 2 (where the actual music starts)

So in Flow 2 you will have the music and the video at TC 00000…

I hope it can help.

Here a playback example: I used a short video with an explanation for the forum, where I speak (so ignore the content  ) :

Brilliant @Christian_R. Now, why didn’t I think of that? :upside_down_face:

Jesper

Well, I am enjoying some german bier: maybe that helped

Good idea!

I’ll try this tomorrow eve with some beer(s) :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Thanks for the Video Show!

cheers

Christian, thanks. That works! So then the start is done.
