Viewing MIDI CC data across multiple MIDI Events in a single MIDI Track

Hi there,

Myself and the team I work for have just made the move over from Pro Tools for feature film scoring for all of our MIDI programming (audio delivery will remain in PT).

The learning curve has been relatively smooth, but I’ve run into something of a dealbreaker for larger templates.

At present, we have 1-bar regions at Bar 1 in every MIDI track which contains MIDI CC information for balancing our template - typically CC1, CC11, but occasionally others as well.

The first bar of our cue is Bar 5, so when I start programming at Bar 5 (thus having a 4-bar gap between MIDI events in the respective track), there is no visual representation of what the MIDI CC value has been set to in the Bar 1 Event in the Controller Lane in the Key Editor. Every other DAW has a (usually greyed out) line in the respective CC lane to show you if a value has been previously set so you know at any given time what value the respective MIDI CC is set to.

I know I can glue the MIDI Events together, but for session cleanliness and MIDI export purposes this is not desirable behaviour. I cannot for the life of me understand why a previously allocated CC value is not visible in ensuing MIDI Events on the same MIDI track.

Is there some setting or Preference that I’ve missed somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I’m sorry, this is not possible.

But if you would set the MIDI CC7 and MIDI CC11 as the track automation, you would see the line.

If both MIDI Parts are selected when you open the MIDI Key Editor, you will see events from both parts. Does that help?

Hi,

This is not really what is @graham_foote asking for, I believe. The problem is you cannot see the line (value) of the 1st Part in the 2nd Part. So if the value is far away (5 bars), you just don’t see it.

Thanks @Martin.Jirsak - you are correct.

The more problematic example is when the first change in (for example) CC11 needs to occur in bar 180. Referencing a value back at bar 1 becomes time-consuming. Not perhaps a major issue in isolation, but when extrapolated over the course of multiple MIDI tracks / multiple versions / multiple cues it becomes a time sink pretty quickly.

We only use Expression for extreme dynamics and Modulation for everything between pp and ff , so this is likely to be a frustration on a regular basis.
