Virtual Audio Cables for Windows – Routing Between ASIO Hosts and Windows Audio Applications

Hi everyone,

I’m developing Virtual Cables for Windows, a virtual audio routing solution intended to connect audio applications through standard Windows playback and recording endpoints.

The project is particularly interesting in setups involving ASIO hosts such as Cubase or Nuendo, where audio may need to be exchanged with applications that use the regular Windows audio stack instead of ASIO.

Typical routing scenarios include:

Audio Application → Virtual Cable → Cubase / Nuendo

or:

Cubase / Nuendo → Windows Audio Application

Possible use cases include:

  • Routing audio between DAWs and non-ASIO applications
  • Connecting sample players and standalone audio tools
  • Creating multiple virtual playback/recording paths
  • Virtual microphone and loopback-style workflows
  • Testing interoperability between ASIO hosts and Windows audio endpoints
  • Recording or streaming audio from DAW-related workflows

The virtual cables appear as Windows audio endpoints, so I’m particularly interested in feedback from ASIO and audio software developers about interoperability, clocking, sample-rate handling, latency and possible approaches for tighter integration with ASIO-based applications.

Any technical feedback from Cubase, Nuendo or ASIO developers would be very welcome.
