Vocoder question

hello everyone, I’m on Cubase Pro, but keep in mind I’m not an expert, I want to make a sound like this, as you can hear there are both melody and chords, I’m wondering if I have to use a standalone vocoder, vocoder sidechain, if cubase vocoder supports different notes or only plays a single note so do I have to look for another vocoder plugin to do that? I have no idea how to do it so any help is greatly appreciated!

I am not sure whether a vocoder is used at all on this sounds.
If you are interested, here is a fast break down of vocoders and its relatives.

Very cool video thank you! But I’m still lost, what do you think that is based on that video? Do you think is a harmonizer?

I uploaded the file to chatgpt, I followed what it said and I kept trying for 7 HOURS to get that effect but nothing came out, so either chatgpt is wrong or I’m missing something, this is what it said:

What You’re Hearing

Vocoder Effect: This is a classic vocoder — the vocal is modulating a synth (usually a pad or chord), creating that robotic, harmonic sound.

Chords: The synth being vocoded is playing chords, likely matching the key (D# or D minor). This gives the vocoded voice that full harmonic texture.

Pitch Follows Vocal: The vocal inflection slightly affects the synth but the chords define the harmony, not just single notes.

Sidechain or Rhythmic Gate: There may be a slight pulsing or gating, giving it a tight rhythmic feel.

:hammer_and_wrench: How This Is Probably Made

  1. Carrier (Synth):

A warm pad or polyphonic synth plays chords in D minor.

Common synths: Serum, Vital, ANA 2, Sylenth, or a stock pad.

  1. Modulator (Vocal):

A vocal phrase or note (dry or slightly compressed).

It controls the filter of the carrier, giving the voice its robotic quality

Hi,

this sounds like a sampled vocal take (maybe with some kind of pad underneath and some fx on top).
Basically, you can just use the Sampler Track to get there. Start with a simple vocal sound from Media Bay - anything will do - and start experimenting with the Sampler Track.

Here’s how to do it, have a look at min 7.45 - I think that’s the kind of sound you are looking for.

Enjoy :+1:

BTW: I’m afraid ChatGPT and alikes are not of much help in cases like this

Thank you for the video, but my issue is more with the harmony than the vocals, i mean what you hear is vocal but it has chords somehow attached to it, but how?? How did they make vocals sound like they have chords in them?

Okay, maybe I should have explained in more detail, sorry:
What you hear is first of all a chopped vocal sound (see video above and this one for more info about adding fx):

That’s gonna be your first track.
Now, you’ll need a second track with a pad sound, you could start with a choir sound but anything will do that serves as a pad. This pad plays the harmonies. If you listen very closely, you’ll hear that the pad sound fills in the blank spaces around the vocal sounds while it’s still audible underneath at a very low level - it’s sort of pumping around the vocal. That’s a sidechained pad that is triggered by the vocal track. What the sidechain compressor does: Every time the vocal kicks in the volume of the pad sound is turned down. This is this pumping effect you hear.

Here’s a quick tutorial on sidechaining:

Here, the kick is your vocal sound and the bass is your pad.
You’ll find plenty more on sidechainig, both Chris Selim and Dom Sigalas have created good YT videos on that subject.

I didn’t want to overwhelm you with info since you said that you are no expert.
To sum it up: You’ll need two tracks - one with vocal chops and one with a pad playing harmonies. On top you need two different techniques - sampling and sidechaining.

It might sound really difficult but it isn’t once you’ve wrapped your head around the concept. You can definetly do it ! :+1:

Thanks!! I’m no expert but I’m not beginner either, let’s say I’m intermediate on my way to advanced :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: so you can go ahead and add details and I’ll try to keep up. Anyways tomorrow I’m going to study this sidechain thing and see if I finally make it hoping I don’t have to bother you again lol

No worries, ask away if you’ve got any questions
If you’ve never used a sidechain before you’ll be amazed how many cool things you can do with it.
