Voice denoiser result - cannot copy SL output layer back to Cubase track

I’m working with SL Pro 10.0.30 in Cubase 12.0.70 on Windows 11.

This is the first time I have used Voice Denoiser.

I successfully used Voice Denoiser to remove background music from a track. Normally with SL, I then copy the SL result back to a normal Cubase track. But it won’t do it with this Voice Denoiser result.

The result in the SL editor is good - exactly what I want. But the usual method of grabbing the SL editor layer and dragging it back to the CB track won’t work. The mouse refuses to pick up the SL layer.

So I tried dupilcating the SL layer (thinking maybe I could copy the duplicate), but SL then moaned that I “cannot duplicate an external layer”.

Anyone understand what is going on. Is this a bug or by design?

If it’s by design, then how can I get a copy of my SL result back in Cubase as a track?

I’ve been using SL for around 3 years and this is the first time I have experienced this as I have not used the Voivce Denoiser previously.

Have you tried using the ARA extension?

Not sure what you mean.

I assume I am using the ARA extension. What other way is there to use SL in CB?

You mentioned dragging and dropping, which means you could be using the standalone version. (With this, you can drag and drop files in both directions with Cubase).

You don’t mention ARA at all. And if using ARA there is really no need to drag and drop. You just make a copy of the file you’re working on and then make extension permanent.

Perhaps give some more detailed info and include screenshots so we can actually know what you’re trying to do.

:pray:t3:

OK, I didn’t even know you could drag’n’drop from the standalone SL to CB. But that’s another story.

I regularly use SL in ARA mode in CB.

Usually after I have done all my SL teaking in the SL editor, I grab the layers at the right hand side of SL and drop them back in the CB track/event area, and I end up with new tracks in CB containing all the layers I picked up in SL layers.

But this is not doable with an SL edit using Process/Voice Denoiser. The resulting SL Layer cannot be picked up with the mouse and dragged back to CB. Just not doable.

I don’t have any screenshots to show as I deleted the project as I simply could not do what I needed.

But I’m still intrigued as to what was different in the SL Layers with Voice Denoiser from a Song Unix. The latter lets me easily drag the SL Layers back to CB Events in Tracks, unlike Voise Denoiser, which seems to result in an SL edit which is stuck in SL forever, and can’t be copied back to CB.

Of course, Voice Denoiser does not make separate layers so there is nothing to drag there at all, except the original file, which already exists.

So, you have 2 options:

  • Use “Ummix Noisy Speech” instead.
  • As I mentioned above, copy the track you are wanting to denoise (this is if you may wish to go back to the raw file later without using a ton of undos, you can skip this if you know you want it permanent) and then when you have the result you want, go back to the Audio>Extension menu and choose Make Extension Permanant.

I think it may help if you were to familiarise yourself a bit more with the ARA process.

Cheers.

Why then is the result presented under Layers - as a Layer. This is at best confusing.

Thanks for the tips.

I could do with a pointer to some documentation on how ARA works. Googling it from several angles just results in articles telling me what I can do with it, and not how it works.

Steinberg help has nothing on how it works either.
