I’m trying to learn voice entry. It looks like I created two stem-down voices. I selected one of the notes and pressed V multiple times but it never changes to stem up. EDIT: it does change to other voices but they are always stem down.
EDIT: also, is there a way to specify the voice directly? I have to hit V a LOT of times before the voice comes back to the original. Maybe 8 times? 4 voices with two stem directions each?
If you turn on View > Note and Rest Colors > Voice Colors, it will be easier to see what voices things are in. Also, if you select any single note, the status bar at the bottom will tell you what voice it is.
And when you’re in Note Entry mode, the caret tells you what voice you’re in – it will display either an upstem or a downstem note, a number for any voice higher than the first, and a + sign if you’ve just created a new voice.
Yes – select the notes you want to move to a different voice (you can use the filter to select notes in a particular voice) and then right-click and choose Voices > Change Voice.
The clue is in your first sentence. When you create the new voice (with Shift V), you can see whether you are creating an Up-stem or Down-Stem voice. If it’s not the direction that you want, press Shift V again.
That helps, but it’s also important to learn how to edit music I’ve already entered. I’m a composer who plans to use Dorico to experiment and change things frequently, not an engraver with a finished idea of a score.
