Voice-specific dynamics

Greetings all -

I certainly do not wish to create a “New” Topic for a Topic that has clearly been discussed several times already.
The Topic is Independent Voice Playback.
I searched and located the closest existing Topic to the problem I am having.
The link to that page is below.
My post is the last one.
The last reply before mine was six months previously.

I have had no replies.

I am still trying to determine how to solve this apparently elementary issue.
(I suspect it is “Pilot Error”).
I apologize in advance if I am missing something primitive.
Feel free to delete this post if the one on the link below is sufficient.

Thank you for your assistance, and very best regards.

There’s been an awful lot of traffic since the Finale announcement, threads can get missed, sorry.

Are you sure you input the dynamics with Alt/Opt+Enter

I erased yours and added new ones and it works correctly. Fortissimo velocity:

Hi David -
Thank you very much for the reply.
I am using a Mac.
Yes - I entered the dynamic with the following key sequence:

Shift + D for the Dynamic Popup
Entered Dynamic
Pressed Alt (with a non-Mac keyboard) and while holding it down, pressed Enter
(Alt + Enter).

After your reply I suspected it might be my non-Mac USB keyboard.
I removed it and installed my BlueTooth APPLE KEYBOARD ( I preferred the large USB keyboard because of the larger keys and fewer typos; it functioned perfectly with Dorico5).

I then tried your recommendation.
Inputted the dynamic with the Alt/Option key + Enter.
Same situation.
In recognition that the preponderance of users are Windows, and that it was possible the Mac key sequence might be different,
I tried all single key entries + Enter:

Fn + Enter
Control + Enter
Alt / Option + Enter
Command + Enter

as well as all two key variations, e.g. (Fn + Control) + Enter.

To no avail.
If this is still pilot error, I’m going to seek therapy.

RSVP,

Gary

Gary, the only thing I don’t see mentioned in your very descriptive procedure: what did you select before invoking the dynamics popover?

@Gary_Andrews, yes.

You need to make sure that that the caret displays the correct voice before you press Shift+D. Voice-specific dynamics are only available during note input (i.e. with the caret active.)

Otherwise, Dorico will paste into Up-stem Voice 1 even though you’re pressing Alt/Opt+Return. (After all, how is it supposed to know which voice you want the dynamic attached to?)

BINGO!
Pilot error.
Ugh. SMH. My embarrassment borders on shame.

Thank you wholeheartedly, Daniel.

Hi K_B
Indeed.
After all that I was still neglecting the caret.
I was selecting the note without it.
As I said to Daniel, my embarrassment borders on shame.
Thanks for taking a moment to help.

This seems to be an odd limitation. I guess the reason is that in note input, the current voice is unambiguous, whereas outside of note input I might have selected notes that belong to more than one voice.

(Also, I have taken the liberty of editing the title of this thread.)

Agreed.
Thank you, Aaron, for your input.
And for properly changing the Title.
