Voices on different staffs cannot be allocated separate library presets

In the screenshot below an extract of violins 1 of Rite of Spring, Part 1 is shown.

It starts with unison, then a two voice division and next 4 solo voices followed by unison again. All voices are allocated in VE Pro using two instances one for VSL Duality Strings with a full and division 1 and 2 port/channel combinations and the solo voices should use four individual instruments of VSL Dimension Strings in a second instance.

The unison and 2 part division work fine, the top two red solo voices can be allocated to separate Dim Strings instruments, but the third and fourth solo voices seem to be coupled. If I allocate one to a Dim Strings instrument the other uses that instrument as well. Now way to allocate them to a different port/channel combination.

What am I doing wrong?

Can you cut the project down to just this instrument and the affected bars, then attach it here? Without seeing the project itself it’s impractical to guess what might be going on.

Hi Daniel, I am not able to provide an uploadable file which has the issue. Even deleting all flows but the problematic one and also deleting all instruments but violins 1 and setting all VEP instruments in the rack related to them on blank still gives a 4.9 MB file.

I have a flow with 4 solo bass staves + gli altri and also one with 4 solo viola staves using the same VEP Instances Duality and Dim. Strings which work fine with all staves going to a different port(channel. Only the violins have this “coupling” issue.

I think the problem lies in the relation between Dorico and Vienna Ensemble Pro in particular if you have coupled instances and maybe also IVP plays a role as with the playback templates. Dorico seems to be unable to clean up all connections when you change from one VEP template to another or when you set the slot in the VST rack on blank which previous had VEP instance on it. I did this in the above mentioned file but some instances although they have no instrument in the setup nor a VEP instance in the VST rack keep connecting. In the full project but also the reduced one I even have a legacy VEP instance automatically created each time I open the file which has no connected instruments anymore in the latest version of the project.

The only 100% working method is to use the silence template and start afresh. This is very time consuming with 70 instruments and all strings at least 6 voices and some more.

I am now trying another workaround which I think works. I disabled all IVP used and created an endpoint configuration which I added to a playback template. After applying this template The VST rack is clean and no legacy instances are loaded in VEP. All instruments are more or less correctly loaded with their expression map. Just my Brass instance did for some load with only 1 instead of 4 ports in the endpoint configuration I had saved.. So that had to be corrected.

Next I reactivated IVP for the strings and some brass instruments (CS and non CS). Now all seems to work correctly but I lost probably 2-3 hours getting all voices for the strings correct in the many flows.

Can you make changes on a copy to avoid interfering with your original file?

Hi Derrek, See above.

Surely if you copy your file, then delete all instruments except those affected and delete most bars, to leave just a few, the file will be small enough and folks may be able to help you.

@mavros,

Uploading big files is often a problem. Here’s how you can get some help:

Make a duplicate of your file. Using the duplicate, use the silent playback template. Cut (delete) bars down so that you have a smaller file that still demonstrates the problem. Is that file, then, small enough?

Or, you could upload it using DropBox or some similar.

Do either of those work for you?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I know about the silent playback template but the issue to solve here is related to the voices connected to the VST instruments hosted in VE Pro. When I activate the silence template, the problem is not there anymore. I can activate the silence template for the original piece, add the VEP instances needed and reconnect all instruments in the inspector again being very careful not to mix anything up in the many flows but this will take at least half a day if not more for this huge piece.

The method I described above deactivating IVP using a new playback template finally did not work. I should have known, Dorico started to load non connected VEP instruments in the rack again when I got to enabling IVP for the strings.

I did find an alternative workaround. I added an additional voice (shift+v) on the bottom staff which seemed to be coupled to the one above with respect to the connected instrument. For the section with three coupled staves I had to add yet another voice to make it work. The only solvable but once more time consuming issue I now have left is that by adding a voice in one flow, voices also move in other flows which often requires to add yet another voice for the instrument.

I know I could have defined voices per flow but that often also leads to issues.

It really would be so much simpler if one could define a voice and its colour for a whole piece independent from the staff it appears on e.g. voice 1 = full section/gli altri, 2 divisi 1, 3 divisi 2, 4 solo 1, 5 solo 2 etc.

@mavros, We’re starting to get hung up on how to upload the file rather than how to fix the problem! Sorry!

I’m still learning all the playback stuff as I principally use the software for notation. But some thoughts on chasing this down.

1.) What happens if you apply a different playback template.

2.) How were the individual parts created (entered one by one, copied and pasted, XML import, other)?

3.) If you make a duplicate file, delete all the notes and just replicate (from scratch) these few measures, what happens?

Any other info on how you got to this point? (Something about the parts being “linked” makes me wonder is they are actually a full-sized cue rather than an individual part.)

Does the 4.9 Mb file you mentioned earlier still show the problem? (That’s not terribly big to upload, or PM to @dspreadbury, I think….)

Sorry @jaskarbong of course I see the point that it is not possible to solve the issue without the extract with the problem in it. I tried to send a PM to Daniel but the limit is the same 4 MB.

I deleted all notes and instruments outside the screenshot above but to no avail. The VST rack instruments creat the boost from about 2 MB with the silence template to 5 MB.

  1. Please have a look at the numerous posts on the problem of using a playback template when you use Vienna Ensemble Pro and Independent Voice Playback. It is not possible today. You always have to fix the result by hand and get a mess in the VST rack.

  2. The source of the score is the well respected Dorico version of Rites of Spring by Stephen Taylor which I downloaded here: ROS, Stephen Taylor. A great piece and a great work on the Dorico score. I am trying to orchestrate using VSL libraries. I did not change anything I am just trying to get all instruments and voices linked correctly.

  3. This is exactly what I did. The file is 4.9 MB. With the silence template it goes down to 1.8 MB but the problem to solve is obviously not visible anymore. So that does not help.

The trick with additional voices works so I can consider it as a solution. It works but the violins 1 now have 13 voices in the flow with the 5 solo voices, a full section and 2 divisi voices (so actually only 8).

You could email the file to d dot spreadbury at steinberg dot de

I think size limit of their mail is 15Mb (maybe 30)

Yes I will do that. Good idea!

Or upload the file to Dropbox or something similar and post a link.
