Hi, I wanted to create 6 voices with stem up/down for a total of 12 voices behind the scenes as it were. I got the first 3 voices up/down added but only have stems down for voices 4, 5 and 6. I can’t seem to find where to add the voice 4 stems up…? Any ideas?
I found something that works. If I select a note and right-click it →Voices→Change Voice→New Up-stem Voice , it adds the next numbered up-stem voice, in my case 4. I was able to add the three voices I was missing. But now I have this:
It is a bit of work if you have to do it in your whole score but in engraving mode you can set the column index in the properties panel to 0 and the notes of different voices will align.
In my workflow I always create the new voice when I need it, to avoid it from jumping one over. What is also possible is to enter the most complicated note combination you expect to be using (probably a 6 string chord in your case) and then allocate each note to a different voice if that is your target.
By the way (maybe I have always misunderstood the concept) you can flip a down stem voice to upstem locally with “f” without issues if that better fits you score.
Note that this doesn’t actually change the voice assignment – it just reverses the direction of the stems. Sometimes this is all that’s needed, but just be aware of what’s actually happening under the covers.
Yes that is what I also understand but it does go a bit against the concept of a discrete up and down stem voices which are supposed to be available without any shift+v entry..
Speaking of stem directions. For percussion instruments I somehow never get them right from the start. I always specify the stem direction in my percussion kits and also check that the instrument definition is consistent with it but I 95% of the time have to manually flip e.g. bass drums to down stem.
As you cannot beam together notes in different voices you can add an identical note as you have in the second voice in the first voice, suppress playback, and hide the stem of the note in the second voice and finally bring them on top of each other with the column index.
