Volume of drum set instruments

How can I adjust the volume of individual instruments in a drum set in Dorico? In the mixer, it seems that I can only make the whole drum set louder or quieter.

Try displaying the kit as individual instruments (temporarily) and adding dynamics there to the individual instruments.

Thank you, Derrek, for the tip. However, I would like to write the drum set as one Dorico instrument with 5-Lines. Is it possible to change the volumes from the separate drum set instruments in the MIDI settings?

Once you have applied the dynamics to the individual part on their own lines, you can restore the five-line kit layout and the parts will obey the now unseen dynamics you added to the original parts. (That’s why I said “temporarily” in my last post.)

I think I’ve basically understand it now.
But how do I divide the drum kit and put it back together again?
I’d like to turn up the volume on toms 2 and tom 1.

Your kit and layout options give you the ability to express the instruments of the kit in a variety of forms, single-line, grid, or five-line staff.

Procedure -----------------------------------------------------

  1. Press Ctrl/Cmd-Shift-L to open Layout Options.
  2. In the Layouts list, select the layouts in which you want to change the percussion kit presentation type.

By default, the layout currently open in the music area is selected when you open the dialog. You can select other layouts by using the selection options in the action bar, clicking and dragging across multiple layouts, Shift-clicking adjacent layouts, and Ctrl/Cmd-clicking individual layouts.

  1. In the category list, click Players.
  2. In the Percussion section, choose one of the following options for each percussion kit in your project:
  • 5-line Staff
  • Grid
  • Single-line Instruments
  1. Click Apply, then Close.

Result

The presentation type is changed for the selected percussion kits in the selected layouts.

Hi @Sven_S, you could easily adjust the velocities in the Key Editor [EDIT: which you can activate also in Write mode]. There are many functionalities to edit things in the key editor. Select the desired notes from the Drum Set track (where you see all instruments), or just select an individual instrument, and use the Transform tool, or the Histogram (for the Selection) to edit the velocities, or just drag them with the mouse…

Hello Derrek,

I wasn’t aware of the different types of drum set presentations, pretty cool.

I divided the drum set into the different instruments as you suggested. However, I still only see one fader in the mixer for the entire drum set…

Hm…

Have a great New Year’s Eve and a happy New Year!

Best regards,
Sven

Hello Christian,

thank you, hhat seems to be the only option at the moment.

Add dynamics to each of the individual lines as you wish. Those dynamics will not show up when you recast the parts into a five-line kit, but the effects of the dynamics should persist.

Great, Derrek, that works well. Thanks for the nice workaround.

Perhaps Dorico should simply have mixers for the individual percussion instruments, at least temporarily, when you have selected the individual percussion track.

If you use Grooveagent for example, you have many possibilities of mixing directly into the plugin.

Ah, then that would be more of a request to Note Performer, which doesn’t support Live Stage either…
