Volume when instrument soloed lower than when not soloed

I am in the process of learning Dorico by writing a song and now orchestrating it (Finale user since version 1). I am having difficulty getting the volumes of instruments where I want them. I am trying to make the brass (trumpet, French Horn, trombone) very quiet as background for a singer so I have soloed the instruments one by one in the mixer to check volume and have them at a level where they are barely audible. But when I unsolo and play the three together, they are much louder, and I am certain this is not just three instruments being louder than one. I just now did a test where I set them so I can’t even hear them when soloed and they are still too loud when they are not soloed.

What playback engine are you using?
Could you provide a test file?

For trumpet and trombone, Garritan Personal Orchestra 5. For French Horn, HALion Sonic. I will create a stripped down version of the project that shows the problem and post it as soon as I am done.

Brass volume issue.dorico (3.4 MB)

Measure 20.

I don’t have Garritan loaded yet (from my old Finale install), so couldn’t hear the trumpet or trombone at all. But the French horn seemed to play at an appropriate volume, with the vocal line prominent.

When I switch to HALion sonic for the trombone and trumpet, the volume is okay. I have loaded expression maps for GPO brass. CC1 is volume. Dorico must be sending the ARIA player something different when an instrument is soloed than it does when nothing is soloed. I switched to GPO for trumpet and trombone as they both, especially the trombone, sound reedy in HALion. As a trombone player since second grade, it made my ears hurt.
