Following the steps from the Anthony Hughes tutorial series I get the correct bass sound. However, the drums or the tenor sax also get routed to this channel. How do I correct this?
Also something weird is happening. After having chosen the Garritan Aria player in the VST slot I go the track inspector to choose the right port, which is 1 and the ex. map set d to default. However, when I go back to VST and Midi the slot is set back to Halion Sonic.
What do I do wrong?
You’ll really need to supply a document that exhibits the problem, as there are several things that need to be checked.
Thank you Ben, looking into the document to see how I could part it with you it tried again and incredibly I now seem to do it right. I made a score from scratch and I have the bass and the trombone from Garritan working. Now I have to enter the other instruments that have to come from Iconica Players & Sections and others. See how far i will come
Hello Ben, sorry to bother you, but: with a bit of luck I now have the instruments that I like. I only need to know how to get the Garriton upright bass to switch between bowed and pizzicato. I tried with the key switches in the expression maps, but I’m not sure which map. If I use ‘Default’ it makes a flute sound.
Can you please provide a sample document, so that I can see what you’ve done, and why you’re getting the wrong sounding instruments.
Is the Upright Bass a jazz instrument that only plays pizz?
Hello Ben, thanks already for willing to look at the sample. Here is the Dropbox link. Be it that I now have the right instruments but I don’t know how to apply ‘arco’ to the Garriton bass.
Basically it is. The Garritan Jazz and Big Band library (JABB) contains a bowed Upright Bass as a separate instrument – unfortunately Garritan Instruments for Finale (GIFF) does not – . There are some VST instruments (e.g. the VSL Upright Bass) which contain a keyswitch for a bowed sample, though.
First thing is that I get error messages about missing HALion instruments.
If you’re NOT getting those, then no need to worry; though I’m fairly sure I’ve got all the HALion instruments.
You haven’t got Expression Maps for the ARIA instruments: the Trombone and the Bass, other than the Default. That will give you Note Velocity for dynamics, which fits the Bass, but not the Trombone.
Do you only have the GIFF (Garritan Instruments for Finale), and not any one the others – GPO5, JABB, etc…?
The GIFF Upright Bass is only plucked. You can put a bowed Bass on Slot 2, and then use an expression map to switch the channels, when pizz or arco is called.
I think the important thing is to determine: what are you trying to do, and what resources (e.g. libraries) do you have?

I can’t see anything wrong with the “plumbing” in your document.
If you want a combined Bass instrument that does Bowed and Plucked, then you’ll need to:
Now create an Expression Map that maps the notation to the VST.
For “Natural”, use an Absolute Channel change to Channel 1.
For “Plucked” (or whatever expressions you want), set the same for Channel 2.
Don’t forget that the Natural expression will want CC1 for dynamics; and the Plucked expression will want Note Velocity.
Assign your Expression map to the Bass instrument, and off you go. You’ll need to assign a Plucked expression wherever you want plucking.
Hello Ben, thanks for your instructions which I applied. Today I bought and installed JABB3.
Despite all, I have no sound. I had a sound, plucked and bowed, in the VST Interface but after applying the Ex.map it is gone. Maybe I should register but there is no website available when I click on the pop-up to do so.
What do i do with that?
Again consulting the tutorial by Anthony Hughes and your instructions I worked out an expression map (JABB Basses…), be it that the 1 (natural) channel is for the plucked bass.
What am I missing?
If you bought JABB, then you should get a PNG image that contains your licence. Drag this onto the ARIA Player app to licence your purchase.
You will only get sound for 2 minutes, and then silence, if you haven’t done this.
Have you followed the instructions – right click on the image and save it on your computer, then drag it onto the ARIA application?
That’s the exact file that you received, without any modification? And you’re dropping it onto the ARIA application, not a VST?
If it doesn’t work, then you should ask MakeMusic/Garritan for help.
(I thought you said you had GPO5 – that isn’t showing in your image.)

And indeed I have GPO5 but today I bought JABB3.
That’s the Playback Template, which connects Dorico’s instruments to the correct Expression Maps and ARIA plug-in setups. (Essentially, saving everything you’re trying to do now, so that it happens automatically in future.)
If you don’t actually have GPO5, then the Playback template isn’t going to do you much good, because it will try to set up ARIA with instruments that you don’t have.
Thank you Ben, the registration problem is solved. Saving the keycard I added info to the name which I usually do for easier finding documents back. Therefore it didn’t work anymore.
