VST default location

Hello,

I recently realised that my VSTs (Halion Sonic, Iconica Sketch, etc.) are saved in my download folder—which I find surprising. I would like it to change it to something less susceptible of being deleted by error. But I couldn’t find any information about a default location. Shouldn’t it go into (I’m on Mac): Library/Application Support/Steinberg?

The default location on Mac is Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 (the Library on the top level).

Are you sure that those files in ~/Downloads are not installation receipts?

The actual VST(3) are here on a mac:

/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3

If you want to move the VST sound library components, you are better off using the Steinberg Library Manager.

Thanks!

Well, what are “installation receipts?” This is what they look like:

Yes, I will make sure to use the Library Manager.

I mean leftovers from an installation.

These are VST sounds not the engines. Look into /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content if they are there, too.

Yes, the Library Manager is the tool to move content.

Yes, there they are, too. Or at least some of them (no Iconica, e.g.):

Would it make sense to just install them all over with the Steinberg Download Assistant?

That’s what I mean. The installer moves the files to their dedicated destination and leaves the decompressed installer files in ~/Downloads. You can delete the installer files.

To be safe check the actual paths of the installed sound files in Library Manager by pressing the DETAILS button respectively.

Hi @oudepote ,

please wait, don’t do anything without my help.

The advice of Vadian is of course meant to be good advice, but your VST content installation is pretty messed up, and in order to not make it even worse, you better listen to my advice, I’m from Steinberg and know best what to do. I’ll send you a private message via this board, please check.

@Vadian , really appreciate your willingness to help here, so please don’t take it as an offence or discouragement.

None taken.
