Cubase 15 Elements
Audio in chanel is receiving audio from virtual instruments and not only from outboard gear connected to the sound card audio in.
How can this happen?

Maybe it goes out of Cubase into your audio interface. There it gets mixed with the signal from the outboard gear and comes back in together with it.
Agreed. Sound likes your audio interface has a loopback enabled or something equivalent. What interface is it?
My audio interface had loopback turned on… and I didn’t know it! Problem solved
