I’m trying to copy a song so that I don’t have to recreate my whole mixer setup, layers and stacks to create a new song. The song I copy has tracks in it. I deleted all the tracks from the new pasted song and then go to Song > “Import Song Project (TRACKS only")’ into the newly pasted song, I get the expected message “The current TRACKS will be erased. This cannot be undone. Are you sure?”. I then click OK, however VST inserts the tracks from the original copied song instead of importing the new tracks.
Using 2.2.82 and tried these steps, but I don’t clearly understand the end - “VST inserts the tracks from original copied song instead of importing the new tracks”. What are you trying to import? Not original song?
Okay. Step by step.
- I open original song, it has 6 audio tracks, 1 layer, 5 stacks, totally 13 mixer channels.
- Export it using File → Export → Export Media Project, it will create .mediaprj project file
- create new project
- Song → Import Song Project (TRACKS only), select your exported file
All tracks without layers and stacks are imported as expected.
I omited a step where you “deleted all the tracks from the new pasted song”? I don’t get why to delete something if you import tracks into new project.
The new song is from Cubase Pro 14 using “File” > “VST Live” > “Export Project”, which I’ve done many times.
I usually create a new song in VST Live by using “File” > “Import” > “Import Media Project” and selecting “Create Parts” and “Create New Song” (see screenshot below). The problem with this method is I have to manually create the “Song Group” channels and add in the “Stacks” and “Layers”.
I thought if I used the method I described in my previous post I could save a little time because channels, layers and stacks would already be in the song. This actually worked in past versions of VST Live. Something has changed.
I should mention that, the reason I deleted the tracks is because I tried the import expecting VST Live to delete the original tracks like it has done in the past, however it did not and it added in 2 Gig tracks which I never use.
So you want to import fresh tracks into existing VST Live project where there are layers, stacks and mixer with fx groups, right?
BTW, uncheck Import Type, let it be not specified. Leave Arrange Track as is - Create Parts. I tried this and all tracks are imported, all Layers, Stacks and Mixer Groups are in place. I tried both ways (File → Import Media Project and Song → Import Song Project (TRACKS only)) and had the same result. Tried with .vlsprj and .mediaprj. Works as expected.
There seems to be a misunderstanding as to what I am wanting to do. New songs do not come with all the Song Group channels (lets leave stacks and layers out of the discussion for now) and cannot be imported from a Cubase project. So, I save time by coping an existing song with the channel configuration that I want for the new song.
WTF, I have 59 songs in my project. The one song I chose to copy is the only one that is causing this problem. I tried different songs on 2 different systems and everything works as expected. I’m not sure what is different about the song I tried other than it has been in the project from a very early version of VST Live. I tried the same steps on the original song I reported the problem and it does not work correctly.
I’m good if you want to close this issue.
Thanks
Look on the icon of Group channel that isn’t imported. Maybe you think it’s Song Group, but it is simple Group. I did this mistake many times.
If you are doing copy/paste channels, probably you copied Song Group channel settings to Group channel and thus gave it the name as you always gave only to Song Group, but now you have Group with Song Group channel name (or vice versa), maybe you use prefix (I use names Reverb, Delay for Groups and SReverb, SDelay for Song Groups, I often don’t wear glasses and it’s too difficult to see difference between icons)
I’m not sure we are referring to the same thing. I am referring to Song Groups created in VST Live, which is a specific channel group for each song (screenshot below). I don’t use the Group channels much because they are global for all songs. So any change made to the fader of a group channel will affect all songs, where as Song Group faders will only affect the song you are on.
Let me guess. You have four groups in your existing project and want to copy them to the newly imported Cubase project. Right?
I opened existing project, there are Song Groups. then I imported project from Cubase. Now project has those groups and imported tracks in one song.. I should route tracks to those groups as needed.
One is clear - the export/import feature doesn’t make the replica of Cubase project into VST Live. And should not.
I would be happy if I could copy song groups from an existing song to the new song. That would be a bit of a time saver.
I did exactly what you need, but by doing otherwise - import song into prepared project.
